That is a really good point Aaron and is definitely worth investigating the data.

Here's a great link to a site published by OHID that will give you insights into that question.

    https://app.powerbi.com/view?r=eyJrIjoiYmUwNmFhMjYtNGZhYS00NDk2LWFlMTAtOTg0OGNhNmFiNGM0IiwidCI6ImVlNGUxNDk5LTRhMzUtNGIyZS1hZDQ3LTVmM2NmOWRlODY2NiIsImMiOjh9

There are good instructions on that page, and then if you click on the links on the left you can go to data based on age, ethnic group, etc.

I know. That's where I got the info from.

    But the question still remains.

But then they also release figures of deaths were covid is a factor on the death certificate. In the example you have given covid wouldn't be listed unless the doctors believe it made the heart issue worse or caused it.

I agree but that's diagnosis and discovery rather than deaths. The repercussions of that are likely to be more long term.

In fact if you look on that took that's just been posted you'll see that many of the "usual" causes of death have remained static so the excess deaths have to be something else.

What to do with the COVID patients though - chuck them on the street. One of my current research projects is with colorectal surgeons. Last Dec through Feb a couple of them were seconded to work with COVID patients due to the volume and many of the theatres they would normally be operating in were converted to makeshift ICU bays. How can they operate on colorectal cancers whilst caring for COVID patients in an operating theatre that is now an ICU bay?

This is aa must read. Talk of vaccine passports and lockdowns are completely non sensical and reflect an incompetent, malignant government.

As schools have now finished one would hope that they don't push the panic button.

School closures are as good as shutting down large parts of our society so is a lockdown on its own merits.

The news that government has been modeling on the outcome they want to implement policy for rather than an outcome on probability of what would happen and real world data from South Africa would give the government some very difficult questions should they impose anything.

Boris's political stance at the moment is very week. Lord Frost resigning, 100 Tory MPs standing up against mild restrictions never mind telling people who they can have and not have in their households, the by-election mauling and further picture of No10 living in their own bubble almost make it political suicide for Boris to impose restrictions without seeing letters flood into the 1922 committee.

The booster programme would be thrown to the wolves should any lockdown be announced. People aren't queuing up in the numbers of 1m per day to find themselves lockdown after having 3 jabs.

Behaviour changes already implemented. People don't want to be locked down on Christmas day so I think you are seeing people talking more caution anyhow, I think this caution will disappear after Christmas, but now people are desperate to spend Christmas together and are doing their own risk assessments.

If Boris is looking for a way out for himself all he has to do is put a full lockdown to the cabinet and say back me or I will quit and then the same to his party. If they don't back him he could quit and blame them.

I don't think they would back him so it would be an easy exit for him

The PM has recently said that there won't be a lockdown at Christmas. And I believe him since he wouldn't want to jeopardise his own failing credentials any further by doing something different

He is usually very careful with his words so his earlier statement leaves plenty of room pre-Chtistmas for tighter guidelines or sectoral changes which stop just short of a lockdown. And then once Christmas has passed (depending on how Christmas is defined of course!), all bets will be off.

This morning, I've been having a close look at the latest data from South Africa, where Omicron is now very much the dominant variant.

The good news is that hospitalisations are still running noticeably lower than in previous waves. Now that may be down to a higher level of immunity (from previous infection/vaccination) or it may be that Omicron is less severe, or a bit of both, we do not yet have enough data to draw any firm conclusions.

Nevertheless, the simple fact is that hospitalisations are running noticeably lower than in previous waves. Now, whilst there are significant differences in the demographics between South Africa and the UK, there are no compelling reasons to indicate that the results in the UK will be significantly different.

The data still suggests that the biggest threat is the rapid increase in cases that, for a relatively short period of time, could significantly impact on our workforec and ability to maintain key services.

The key question for me is that if this variant is as mild as the data suggests, and a large percentage of the population have received a booster (further boosting protection to 75%), then do those infected and still able to do there job really need to isolate?

The data may suggest that Omicron is milder, but we do not yet have enough data to confirm that. Indeed, I have seen one set of early data that indicates it is no milder than Delta (although, like those that indicate it may be milder, it is also based on a limited amount of data).

Let's just wait and see. I remain very hopeful, regarding Omicron, but I want to see the data firm up first.

And whilst I do not believe we should go into panic mode over Omicron, I believe we still need to be cautious.
