Why would be lobbing +£100k offers out without some kind of encouragement from either the club or the player himself or his appointed agent.

No. We have a realistic chance of signing this player either now or in summer. We’re not talking 500k. It’s someone out of contract in the summer, not on as much as you’d think. We (or others) can offer him a better deal than current club can. So not like Kieffer Moore, who we never stood a chance of landing.

 

All deals have a starting point don’t they and the buying club put the feelers out with a start bid and test the water then take it from there

You literally just posted that the player in question has no reason to leave his current club and then gave several reasons why. How are you now calling the same player a ‘realistic’ target?

They do, but I'd suggest some kind of ground work would have been done prior to actually putting in a bid even if that bid is just testing the water as you mention.
Even at our level and especially wth a six figure deal in the offering , the club surely would have gained some encouragement during the way.
I cant believe Sparks picks the phone up to offer £100k+ for someone without some due dillegence . Either the potential club have made it clear a deal could be in the offing or the player/agent have contacted a club official (ie Turnbull) and made it clear that the player would be prepared to come, and that his current club would be prepared to sell.

 

He is a realistic target. He’s out of contract in the summer. We are a bigger club, have promotion potential next year (in theory) and will offer more money or a longer deal etc than his current one. But when a player is out of contract in the summer I understand, from his point of view, why he might run down his current deal rather than signing here. He might think he can get interest from a higher division than us this month, for example. Whether that interest materializes, of course, is another matter.

let’s just wait and see if City go back for another pop anyway or have anyone else in mind instead.....

When players are out of contract clubs listen to five figure bids at our level. We would with Wood, for example, wouldn’t we.

The selling club then needs to decide if they want to write off their season for x amount of money. Some will, some won’t as the player is deemed to be worth more than x amount to them etc, for example if they could still push for promotion.
