I think the thing that galls most of us (and Ryan Sparks), is that they appear to have made a unilateral announcement. Apparently they did not communicate with City and the way the conducted themselves, I suspect that they made the decision and then informed the EFL. One would think that they would firstly get permission from the EFL, then notify City, before going public.
You wonder about checks and balances, what criteria was employed, which medical staff were consulted, and who made the decision.
Quite frankly Grimsby appear to have conducted themselves in a poor manner.

.Interesting article here, ‘Bradford City have suggested the EFL should consider awarding teams walkovers should their fixtures be postponed due to coronavirus‘.
    ...............................................................................................................................................................................
“There’s going to have to be something put in place as a contingency for what would happen if every week we missed a game,” Bradford director of communications Ryan Sparks said.
I’ve looked at our calendar with the club secretary and I don’t see the gaps. Where are you going to play the extra games?
“We’re obliged to finish the season on time and there are reasons to do that – which involves not impacting on the 2021/22 season.
“In my view there is a huge amount at stake this season for clubs in Leagues One and Two in terms of the future viability of football in this country outside of the top two tiers”.
    ................................................................................................................................................................
Sparks added: “How many weeks can the EFL realistically postpone fixtures for
“I believe there is a rule in there at the moment that you can have a walkover. Maybe that may need to be considered.

“Obviously, we hope there are no more outbreaks at all and everybody’s fine. But the virus is coming back and it’s hitting the population quite hard in certain areas of the country.

“With that in mind, footballers are not immune from getting“.

Surprised there is nothing in the T&A.

He's not an Academy player. He signed pro-terms in 2019. He is currently on loan at Spalding United but like his fellow loanee Painter they train with the Grimsby first team to continue full time training.

Are Grimsby going to give us a ‘walk over’ 3 point victory?

Leyton Orient v Cheltenham match is ON, so the option of switching City v Cheltenham to this Saturday is a non-runner.

The T&A making it clear again this morning that it is Philip Day who is driving the call for the league to be suspended. The same man whose club have called off 3 games because a young squad player who is currently on loan to Spalding tested positive for Covid. Coincidence? I think not. I hope the EFL throw the book at them.

By the looks of it no. As usual with anything regarding the football league the EFL look like fools, I can't for one minute think that Grimsby thought they could postpone the match without following EFL advice. Never known a side postpone a game before without consulting the powers that be.

As I've just alluded to what is this rule book? If there is one then either Grimsby are fine within the confines of that or they should forfeit the game. There's no way a team can just call off games at their will.

I don't know either but I'm assuming there must be one, somewhere.
The fact that the EFL have publicly stated Grimsby were the instigators and they are now investigating the matter suggests they think there has been some sort of rule breaking going on.

It's straightforward in the league. If a club can't fulfil a fixture because of say illness or currently isolation, the club has to inform the EFL about that formally. It's a matter for the EFL then to formally postpone the game once they are satisfied with the medical advice which the club received. The EFL is clear on this. A club cannot postpone a game of its own volition. If it does, it becomes a disciplinary matter for the EFL.The EFL even supplies simplified Guidance Notes to help clubs find their way through the EFL's very detailed Regulations. This is what they say

It is not permissible for a club to make a decision to postpone a match and in the first instance Clubs should contact the Football Services Department for advice.

I think that's clear! Grimsby cannot choose to postpone its game.

It's down to the EFL to resolve this now and to discipline the club through their usual process. Those won't usually extend to Grimsby forfeiting the game.

I can't believe Grimsby would do it without thinking they were within EFL guidelines. Problem is this now sets a precedent that could be abused if the rules are not made crystal clear. Let's face it, we know how bad the EFL are running things, wouldn't surprise me if Grimsby were well within their rights to do it based on the EFL guidelines.

You could well be right and if so, it makes a complete mockery of the whole situation. I just don't see how those guidelines have been interpreted so differently by 2 different clubs. Stevenage haven't closed down their training facilities for 2 weeks, they played on Saturday and as far as I'm aware, are playing this coming Saturday and next Tuesday in the Cup, yet they have had 3 players test positive. Either Stevenage or Grimsby have misinterpreted the guidelines and the EFL need to be clear about which club has done that.

It's the EFL mate, do you expect anything different from an organisation that has clubs disappearing on its watch? Easy to knock Grimsby here but without knowing what reasons they've made their decision to postpone its hard to judge.

Its not really hard to judge though is it? Dont start feelijg sorry for them and making excuses for poor conduct. Blanket call off of their fixtures is not on.
