It's essential to be able to order that kind of stuff; the shops are not essential at all.

But if Sports Direct staff are silly enough to not phone in sick, that's up to them - unless Boris steps in and puts an end to it.

You can order online from Sports Direct I believe.

As I say mix messages. Easy to get round.

Thing is, it's been open to interpretation the whole time, then the security is tightened day on day.

The government have swiftly altered their methods for dealing with this virus, as early days they were extremely lackadaisical. Now they're on the verge of enforced lockdown.

Each time a Mike Ashley 'interprets' the rules, Boris locks it down further. Ashley is a fool to think this ploy will either work or represent positive PR.

    It won't.

I would imagine their is a multi tiered management structure endorsing whilst implementing a culture of fear in the workplace, like supermarkets. Not a lot workers can do.

Sports Direct are infamous as a business, bullies running their business on zero hours contracts and underpaying kids left, right and centre.

Those who can afford to walk out on their jobs, ie, part time staff, students, etc, I would. Feel bad for any staff on supervisor/management contracts, though.

But asthma is one of the illnesses that is on the list putting people in a higher risk category.

The virus leads to severe lung inflammation. Combine that with asthma and that is a very dangerous combination. Better to keep that person out of harms way for their own safety, as well as keeping people out of hospitals as much as possible.

I've just listened to Michael Gove on the radio. He was saying that people should only leave their homes for certain essential things eg buying food or if their work was an essential service such as an NHS worker. He was asked the direct question 'For clarity for everybody, if a vulnerable person needs a plumber for an emergency at home, can the plumber visit the vulnerable?'. After some procrastination, he finally said yes, so long as they keep some distance between the plumber and the vulnerable person. OK so far! The interviewer went on. 'If a non-vulnerable person asked for the same service, should the plumber attend?'. After more procrastination and talking around the subject without answering the question, he was pushed and eventually said yes, well sort of! At that point, Gove realised where this was going! The interviewer followed up with a third question. 'In that case is a plumber to be regarded as an essential service and if that is the case, why isn't plumbing and similar services included in the Govt's list of essential services?'. More blustering but no real answer from Gove.

Swap plumber for locksmith and you might have an answer straight from the minister responsible for the No 10 Cabinet Office.

Absolutely excellent article yesterday. This echoes my comments further back in this thread about us having got the balance between essential private enterprise and equally essential public services and planning completely out of kilter.
If there is one good thing that comes out of this horrendous situation we're currently in, it looks like it will be the end of Thatcherite total free market dominance for the foreseeable future. A properly mixed public/private economy is the only rational solution in today's world.
Note, this article is in the Financial Times, not the Guardian.

He didn't interview particularly well. But - and this is a complete rarity - I have a huge amount of sympathy for our politicians right now. They're in an impossible position and in globally unprecedented times. And as usual, many of the public show a complete lack of common sense and accountability for their own understanding of the situation and their role in making responsible decisions.

The government can't make a provision for every possible circumstance in every persons walk of life throughout the country. Use the plumbing example - most people, both as the customer and plumber would be able to define whether a job constituted being an essential piece of work. Toilet broke? do you have others you can use? If so, that's non-essential. Tap dripping? annoying, but not essential. One tap/sink not working? Not essential. Water escaping and flooding your kitchen? Well, yeah that's essential.

Sports Direct - clearly not an essential line of business. Completely obnoxious behavior from them, completely at odds with the principle of what we're trying to achieve.

    Its really not that hard.

And it is for this reason that the current definitions are not that detailed. There needs to be some flexibility as there are thousands, if not millions, of slightly different scenarios either side of that line as to what is and isn't essential.

I expect the government to tighten up the definitions as we go along, especially if the likes of Mike Ashley try to use the lack of detail to create loopholes.

We are in uncharted territory here and logistics of managing all this are immense beyond belief.

Having been on the front line in preparing, testing and exercising many of the plans now being used, I think I can honestly say that I do not envy those that are currently on the front line, who are having to manage the response to this virus.

We all have to do our bit and no one should underestimate the value of effectively doing nothing, the task that many of us have been asked to do. It is a small price to pay, compared to those on the front line.

Politicians do have a difficult job at the mo and have a difficult balancing act to perform. To date messages have been confused and have changed fundamentally within a matter of days. It hasn't been helped by people ignoring certain advice and acting as though they were somehow immune from the advice and the virus itself.

Having one of the key politicians on the radio answering questions was a great opportunity to demonstrate to all of us that they were in control and had their collective finger on the country's pulse. The question of the plumber was a straightforward one and one which won't be an exceptional instance. Gove clearly hadn't been briefed on these kinds of instances and instead spoke at length about the generalities of the arrangements. He was found out on the important detail. And whatever we might think about politicians, we expect them to be able to answer such a basis question as the one posed without Gove having to bluster his way through it. It undermines confidence in the Govt's approach if a half baked answer is the response from a very senior minister at the heart of No 10

We were having this conversation on the countdown last night. Until the government come up with a plan for self employed people then people are forced to carry on working. In my friends group chat my mate said his estate agent neighbour went out to work this morning. Another house had a decorator turn up. Essential?

They need to make up some more money and give every one a universal basic income.
