We are all forgetting that the ‘project’ that Edin sold to Stefan wasn’t necessarily mid-sold. It probably does work in Germany/Europe, but won’t work in the UK unless serious money is thrown at it. Our transfer market is vastly over inflated and is another reason why it doesn’t work whereas it may in Europe.

I still think Edin’s project was/is the right idea. We do need to become self-sufficient, though it has to be implemented properly and should not come out of a separate budget to the first team

 

Barnsley do a similiar thingy model but they have reaped massive rewards from their sell ons

The ideas of the structure of player development comes full circle every few years.
We had Gordon Gibb telling us of his plans for scientific approach to player development, didn't last administration.
Then we had Archie Christie telling us of his plans of a development squad, that lasted until PP came in and gave him short shrug.
Finally we've had Mr Rahic's expertise with Greg as side-show Bob. It barely made September with almost another admin thrown in.
Give it around 2022/23 and we'll be having another pointless eureka moment.

I always deem these ideas with a certain amount of cynicism
A good scouting set-up with a damn good eye for a player, will always suffice to bring in talent, ok we haven't a Thorpe Arch, but neither have the Peterboro's and Barnsley's of this world.

 

Seriously how many of these development projects actually make enough money to supplement the running of the club? If you do it right it costs mega bucks and even then I am not certain it actually makes money. Self sufficiency is a admirable aspiration but expensive and with varying success. In our lowly position it is a non starter. We need all of our available resources to go into the first team. Man City et al, sell all their young ones that are not good enough on Brand name only.
