You are not a Bradford City fan, so stop posting as if you are! The very fact that we are having to go into the free players market is a telling inditement of our recruitment!

Poor recruitment? Nah. Let me go back on here and find the comments (and on twitter) about what a good summer it was etc. Loads of comments.

The current issue is we’ve had a poor HC (but have now got a good one) and we’ve quite a lot of injuries at the moment - i believe at least 6, of which 5 or so should be starters.

But you just ignore that, as it’s just “more fun” to deride the club instead.

A well managed club shouldn't be relying on picking up the scraps in the free agent pool or if you like the leftovers after everybody else has taken those they want. Our recruitment wasn't as good as it should have been over the summer and left the squad susceptible to injuries in key positions. And now that has come home to bite us. It's just a repeat of last summer's recruitment.

Now with a new coach who has started to see the quality of our squad, he is left with no alternative other than to consider free agents if he feels he needs to recruit. It isn't part of some master plan; it's a consequence of getting things wrong over the summer on both the playing and coaching side.

Sheff utd have just signed 2 players that were free agents would you class them at a league above as scraping the barrel?

We are in the same position we have been every season since the take over which is recruitment has been done without any knowledge of who the manager/head coach is going to be. First year PP left, second year SM/Edin were at loggerheads and if theybcould would have parted ways, and then this season. You can not prepare for a season with no one in charge on the football side.

Personally I think this has been the biggest mistake by the owners and this year just shows they haven’t learnt from the previous two years.
Hopefully Hopkins will be still in place with no talk of leaving etc so we can build over the summer.

    Cover??
We need 3 new centre backs and sack these 3 right off. I don't understand the love in for McGowan.
Some on here even mooting him for captain. He's the main issue right now. Too slow and always looking to launch it.

Think you’ve replied to the wrong person there?

(I really don’t mind clubs picking up players for free, inside or outside the transfer window).

So if Hopkin wants to bring in a couple of players now, you’re saying he shouldn’t be allowed to because it shows recruitment was poor (it wasn’t) in the summer?

Yet lots of other fans are saying “let Hopkin manage”, “in January let him sign players” etc.

Those 2 points are at odds with each other.

    Surely anyone can see that?

Our recruitment has been so impressive we’ve had our worst points start after 7 games season since our PL relegation season and are now 9/4 to be relegated.

We’ve signed 18 players, of which about 4 are good. Another couple who we though would be good but haven’t now shown it yet, and the rest who’re either crap or not developed enough to play league one football yet.

Too much youth, too big a squad, not enough quality and glaring holes in key positions.

For you to think the recruitment was good is laughable.

We needed at least 3-4 more quality, proven players.

Morning dennis i agree on some of your above but the main problem was putting all our eggs in one basket with regards to wage/budget on player/s who cant play in the hussle bussel of league 1 football ie payne-too small /light weight,doyle-not a tatget man type-scannel-an injury prone out and out right sided player-but played all over place since coming to city.playing two same footed players at centre halves-look what happened last season with this.
Basically we used all our budget on a lot of talented individuals but they cant play all together in a system that is required to accumulate enough points over 46games.
The fault lies at edin and gregg.
P.s rememer reid was a free agent and that turned out ok.

I did and i apologise I just don't get why fans complain at such signings. What's wrong with signing a odd one or two players that are free agents, isn't that the same as someone who is out of contract in the summer.

Most would agree that there have been some good recruits over the summer but that isn't the point. It's the squad which is the issue. It isn't big enough; it lacks cover in key positions and the there isn't sufficient depth of quality. All of that was recognised by some on here before a ball was even kicked. And we went into the season with those shortfalls in the squad and with an inexperienced rookie coach with no pro football experience in charge of this squad. I place nearly all of that at the feet of the owner who appointed Collins even when he hadn't applied for the job.

Here's a link to a post which shows how squads can be so susceptible to injuries especially to those in key positions...

    https://bantamtalk.com/index.php?threads/josh-wright-new-city-captain.795/page-2#post-76962

Football is a contact sport and injuries do happen. What has happened to us is not that unusual over a season. But somebody at our club has chosen not to have cover for such an eventuality. I wonder who?

Nobody is suggesting it is fun to deride the club as you suggest. It is painful to do so for many fans and your comment is insulting to many such fans. But then there are always those who are so blind because they choose not to see!

Don't misrepresent or twist what I said!

Hopkin has no alternative to bring in free agents because that's the only route that is available to us. The important message is that we as a club should not be in that position. We should have recruited a bigger and better squad in the summer.

No need to apologise, easy mistake to make.

Totally agree. Say we sign Henry on deadline day fans would be “decent experience signing”. Sign Henry 1-2 weeks later “our recruitment is a shambles”. Laughable.

You’re right that the squad isn’t good enough. But it’s not that it isn’t big enough - it’s the opposite. It’s too big. Too many players, not enough quality.

He was poor yesterday, the five at the back hindered the defence rather than help it. At times they had two upfront yet had space against a five. How does that work? People thinking its just a case of a tweek here and there are utterly clueless. Its a worse start to a season i can remember, the two wins we have could easily have been opposition wins. I remember as the bad run started last season people were saying its alright we're still in the playoffs but anyone with a brain knew the writing was on the wall and we ended up mid table. This has that same feel about it, still some on here saying its alright new coach now, the results will come. Well at this moment i can't see where the next win is coming from, in truth yesterday, apart from the goals their keeper had absolutely nothing to do where ours was like Custers last stand. We were battered yesterday.

Each game now is very significant, we don't start picking up wins quickly and we find ourselves in the bottom four with a team relying on inexperienced youngsters and with zero confidence. We aren't that nailed on playoff team anymore, Edin has seen to that, we are now with the other bottom feeders scrapping the arse end of the barrel. Good luck Hopkin cos you're gonna need it. In spades.

In one sense I agree with you but I don't really regard many of those who were bought for the 'development' squad as part of the first team squad at the moment. I don't regard the likes of Devine, Patrick, Hudson, Clare, Isherwood (maybe) and others as first team ready at this stage and we shouldn't be relying on these to make up for the shortfall in the first team squad.
