Burton (H) - August 21st

Seems to be a theme mate. Hoping he'll keep 4-4-2 for the time being though.

 

Hard working display something that was none existent against Southend, wasn’t pretty second half but much needed. Thought Scannell and Akpan were stand out.

 

Agreed. Think Chicksen deserves some credit as well, he's come in for a lot of stick on here but put in a solid performance tonight.

 

We were lucky.

Grind out the 3 points but we will take that.

Long season ahead for us though.

You're right, he was but I'm talking about Chicksen and he played ok.

Yeah thought he had a steady game. Mellor and McGowen were the weaker players within he back 4. Sadly some will still harp on about Chicksen being crap because they refuse to consider the possibility that he doesn’t play crap every game.

 

Most impressed by Scannell, Wright and Miller today.

Defence is better with McGowan in there, but Burton were so wasteful in front of goal it was untrue. So many good chances and continually missed the target.

 

Was it me but that was a poor quality game.

I was at the game so wouldnt know .I thought it was Mega with Jason on Pulse ?.

 

Very pleased with the clean sheet and three points... however I feel we've to improve a lot if we want to be up there this season. Not sure on the reasoning for Mellor's departure but I hope it's not an injury - whenever somebody attacks Riley I expect a goal. We need a system that fits Payne down the middle as that's where he is most effective. Has Doyle had a shot on goal yet? We need a big man too (other than Brunker…) because I don't think he's won a header yet either!

On the positives I love O'Donnell's passion, if he stays injury free I feel he'll be a standout this season. Follow tonight's win with a win on Saturday and it's not been the worst of starts. With games against two relegated sides and last years losing PO finalists, to go in to September on 9 points would be a nice start and something to build on.

 

Scanell was our best player by far. Thought Akpan did well, and wright who I've been a little unsure about was better tonight too.
Miller and Doyle up front both ran there arses off, but unfortunately didn't get much service in the box.
Far from perfect, but definitely better.

 

Why did Akpan bottle that 50/50 ball by the centre circle in the first half.

 

This is a cliché but result was more important than the performance tonight. On balance a draw would've been fair we're lucky their finishing was woeful. But equally we also had some good chances.

My observations think midfield of Wright and Akpan are hard working but slow and a little negative for a home game (that said Wright laid on a peach of a through ball second half which Scannell should've done better with).

MOM Scannell by a mile ran himself to ground and gave their fullback a tough evening.

Doyle and Miller up top is more effective than a Doyle on his own and Payne in the hole. Miller works very hard.

Gibson tries to hard, one touch too many and loses possession. He has talent but needs to get the basics right.

Found it quite entertaining to watch and very happy we somehow found a way to win. We needed it

That Burton had 21 shots and missed the target 20 times is kind of frightening, though.
