I can certainly see why Barnsley tried him further back because he's not influential enough at the minute to be playing behind a striker.

Compare that to Walker who harries, chases and rattles into people so he's contributing even when he's not creating. That's the work rate he needs to replicate, even if it's without the challenges and silly bookings Walker can pick up from time to time.
