I agree that most games are settled by fine margins.
That's why 3 games isn't a big enough sample size

The Cowley's have managed hundreds and hundreds of games

Swindon - Cook hit the post and Wilson scuffed the follow up
Wrexham - City should have had a penalty for handball.

    Easy isnt it...

The same Cowleys that failed at Town and Pompey? They can only dine off that Lincoln success for so long. Their football is horrific too.

A few years old but was sent a summary of Cowley's style of play:

    https://soccer-science.co.uk/spotlight-danny-cowley/#:~:text=This%20then%20results%20in%20how,when%20the%20right%20opportunity%20arises

Feel this is the sort of style we should be playing (more direct with lots of pressing / counter-pressing) and is very similar to the path McDonald has started us down so don't think we'd lose any of the momentum from the last few decent performances but with the added bonus of extra experience to boot for the longer term

They didn't fail at Town, far from it. They kept them up after taking over with 1 point in 6 games.

Pompey fan posted this on another forum a few days ago.

"Cowley's style here was to try a high press when out of possession, not always but in certain situations and for a set duration. Sometimes it worked but not always. Defensively we were generally pretty solid.

Attacking wise, he was a fan of switching play with long diagonals out wide to try and create overloads. Then get the ball into a powerful striker who was good in the air but also decent on the ground. The best version we saw of this was when we had George Hirst on loan in season 21/22.

What we rarely saw was any attempt to play through the middle, making us a bit one-dimensional and easy to defend against. Our opponents started doubling-up in the full back areas and forcing us to funnel the ball through the middle, which we were pretty hopeless at. During the bleak days of last season Oct to Jan we were barely creating any chances for Bishop.

Recruitment-wise, yes, they wanted total control and by all accounts turned down plenty of recommended players, which we'd then see do well elsewhere. Our CEO got very frustrated with this, hence the move to bring in sporting director Rich Hughes from Forest Green early last season.

In hindsight our dreadful form at the back end of last year was a blessing, and gave Hughes an opportunity to bring in his own man, and someone who was happy to work in the new structure.

So, the Cowleys are nice people, who are great at reconnecting the club with the fans if that is an issue. Their football can be effective if they can recruit the right players for their system. It's not always pretty, but they don't just go long to a big striker which is a bit of a myth. They tend to want to hit long balls to wide players who can either cut in and shoot or supply the striker(s)."

I'd love to agree, but I was at Wimbledon on and we'd have been shaking our heads in frustration, at how they they hadn't at least drawn, if we were one of their fans.

We arguably played the better cultured footie, but they seriously should scored at least three times.

But that's footie for you. We've had plenty the other way around. My point is that if Hughes had got that result from that performance, we'd be moaning about it.

Based on Saturday, if there's three teams that will end up above us and Wrexham then it's going to be one of the best L2's in years.

I still think that both teams and Stockport for the automatics is not fanciful.

Remember, we're still unbeaten all year against our 'rivals', i.e. the ones expected to be going for promotion, in the league.

That's because the Wimbledon performance came on the back of two better performances and at an entertainment level that we very, very rarely achieved under Hughes.

I watched the game, we did what good teams do and grinded out a 1:0 win at a tough place.
Top three sides do a lot of that throughout a promotion season
I'll take exactly the same at MK Dons tomorrow

Do you honestly believe their remit was to keep Town up with 40 games to play? A team relegated from the Premier League?

They got sacked for finishing just 2pts above the relegation zone.

Of course that was their remit. When you're rock bottom with one point from seven, and yes it was seven not six, matches the one target for that season was avoid back to back relegations.

Yes, that was exactly the remit. Town confirmed it at the time.
They left because of a disagreement over future transfer policy.
Town wanted to use more foreign players and the Cowley's didn't.

Huddersfield were a relegated side from the PL - Cowley had 39 games and nearly 120pts to play for. They just survived by the skin of the teeth. And that's why they were sacked.

Some ambition that from a team given £100m in parachute payments, with some excellent players on the books and with 39 games left.

I don't believe it for a second if I'm honest otherwise why would Town have sacked then after achieving the remit?

They wanted foreign players and the Cowley's didn't. It's all in the Yorkshire Post article above.

    Cowley 'saved them'.

I agree with you about a lot of the infrastructure, funding, support and potential.

However he also runs the risk of being sacked by the end of March 2024 and then having no income. He comes across as a level headed shrewd guy. Do you potentially put £233,000 on the line? Figures based on the earlier post which gives the ‘average’ salary as £200,000 a year, plus a potential pay cut if the manager’s salary is less and say £100,000 per annum.

Head versus heart? I guess he will be married and have a young family? So he needs to factor in all those elements to the decision, if he is even in with a serious shout of the job.

Kev Mac wants to carry on playing but any new manager may not play him anyway and leave him out. Risks not playing and not managing and frozen out. In his own interest to take the job if offered
