Just got back from the game. Better team first half. Accy shaved it second half but we had our chances to win it in the 90 minutes.

defensively we looked ok, Stubbs was constantly organizing the defense.

Halliday played well, whilst ridhalge was rightly subbed. Hendrie did okay when he came on.

Not sure why gilly replaced smallwood. Would surely have been better to give Macdonald some minutes. Faint shout for a pen on gilly in the second half, and would need to see it again.

top performers - Halliday, walker, Pattinson, Stubbs, Odour. Cook was isolated for most parts and feeding off scraps.

draw was a fair result at full time, but shocking pens from Accy. Their last one was comical. Rarely see a pen that has literally everyone in the crowd cracking up. All in all an ok performance and decent away night.

We were excellent tonight according to hughes and he's still saying we were very good at crawley.

Yeah, he'd be a bit thick to say anything else, wouldn't he?

Not sure on that performance at all, little cohesiveness, couldn't string passes together and a lack of chances created.

Not sure what the formation was at all, oduor seemed to be in front of or alongside halliday, it was like a 3-6-1 at times.

I thought the move to wing backs was to get a second body alongside cook but it appears walker and pattison were giving an instruction to bust a gut to support him as well as do there own duties as opposed to him having a partner.

We appeared to have carried on from last year in letting the game drift away as opposed to forcing an outcome particularly after going ahead.

Others seem to see it differently but I was very underwhelmed by that particular against a very young Accrington team.

Lots (and lots more) to work on. That seems way off a promotion side even at this early stage.

Not really as unless he thinks fans watch the games with there eyes shut, I don't think he will find many/any to back up his very good crawley assesment still.

His job isn't to analyse a game in line with your opinion, his job is to manage the morale of a squad of players in line with what's just happened.

I think the manager of a team is probably the last place I'd go for if I wanted accurate analysis.

There are plenty of professional summarizers out there, Mark Hughes isn't one of them.

That's a truly bizarre comment. I don't understand why a manager being critical of a poor performance could be considered as 'thick'.

You don't need to lambast the players but surely it's good practise to recognise that a performance was below par rather than tell the fans everything is great. Surely that's not what fans want from their manager.

    Really?!

So you think demeaning his players makes sense, but steering them towards his goals and aims by deflecting criticism away from them after progressing in the cup anyway is 'truly bizarre'?!

    'we weren't at the races'
'we need to do better in certain areas'
'there were aspects I wasn't pleased with'

You don't need to be 'demeaning'.

Surely recognising limitations is better than fobbing everyone off with nonsense.

Important to get the first win under the belt but we weren't particularly good tonight again.

Same problems with the wing backs negatively impacting our attacking play, particularly Ridehalgh who is just nowhere near it. We'd go up several levels with two pacey, attack minded players in those positions.

And whilst I'm not against the back three, I am against the 5-4-1 we've played so far. Cook is far too isolated and Walker is far less effective coming in off the left. Hughes needs to choose a partner for Cook and go 3-5-2 albeit that will leave a dilemma around Oduor who has been our best performer in the opening two games.

Well if your happy with his glowing performances everytime that's fine. It reflects on him and goes back to the you cannot criticise him because he's mark hughes attitude.

When did Jon say it was a glowing performance??

like does anyone actually read what other posters write on here?

All Jon said was that Hughes isnt going to go off script. Doing otherwise would be suicide.
Imagine him saying “oh yeah this formation we have gone for isnt quite working out i have made a mistake”
Hed be sacked before the interview finished. Wouldn’t really inspire hope in the fans nor the players either…

'We have to look at ourselves - we can do better.'

Pep Guardiola after 1-1 draw with Forest. Says similar every time they are below par. He'd look a bit of a dick if he comes out saying 'we were great' when they weren't. Name any top manager and I'll find you numerous examples where they've been critical of sub par performances.

Nobodies saying he should. Just don't start hailing performances as very good when they weren't.
