So you are saying we will only sign Odour and possibly Critchlow on permanents and then 3 or 4 loans to bulk up the squad?

Well you replace them with better loans as you are more attractive. You just adapt.

Give me a Burke and Cullen in L1 any day of the week. No chance we are signing players of that quality on perms.

 

Didn't we expect that last season? I was expecting big things from his little book of contacts but other than Lewis and Wright, there were no stand out performers. A real statement of intent midfielder would be a good start.

 

Smallwood was a cracking signing on paper - a statement of intent. More to come from him next season hopefully.

Critchlow and Banks were more than passable too. Halliday and Stubbs look decent enough. Walker another - injuries didn't help. Chapman finished strongly. Not a bad signing by any stretch.

I think we built a promotion winning squad last season. Hughes let us down on the field if anything.

 

A very specific type of midfielder needed. The state Sergio posted showed Smallwood is more than capable of doing the job required if he's partnered properly. And thats no slight on Gilliead or anyone else but a midfielder of Smallwood and an energetic mobile player should be more than good enough. It's clear Hughes doesn't trust East and Gilliead isn't really the right sort of foil. Wrexham looking at Max Power apparently and that's the sort of player we should be looking at.

 

I agree with your post but it must be difficult to ensure you get the correct loan signings as it's a bit of a minefield and it also means you're struggling for continuity in the squad.

2 or 3, fine, that can work but more than that and your basically ripping everything up and starting again every summer.

 

I think its more about getting the permanents correct - create a nucleus and a culture. We should be targeting quality in the loan market - but like you say 2-3 maximum so you can replace them hopefully with better as you move up.

 

Yeh Max Power be a cracking signing for them - would take him. I dont mind Gilli either as a squad member, bags of energy but we need that little bit more next season. Smallwood is key and we should be looking at his short comings and making sure someone else can do that job.

Also on Dack - looks like he off to Charlton.

 

I'm not disagreeing, just pointing out other teams who have gone down that route have either been relegated the following season or struggled, didn't Yeovil do it several seasons ago ?, I'm sure we would all agree as a club we need to be able to at least compete in the league above if we were to be promoted.

Yes I get that but I'd think the team loaning you players need to see they are not sending a lad out to play in a struggling team, IMO you need to have the nucleus of a side able to compete in that division.

 

How many are you expecting it’s been stated that we are going to have a “leaner” smaller Squad so far it’s one in one out and if Critchlow signs that will be two Sparks says they have talked to premiership clubs about two or three already that’s a lot need to go out before it becomes leaner

 

Remember the Rangers youth keeper linked the other month - Lewis Budinauckas?

Looks like he will be leaving Rangers as no contract extension offered. Apparently we have been scouting him and really like what we see. T&A reported back in April.

 

Well considering 7 have been released, 5 sent back to their parent clubs, Foulds sold, Jake Young told to find another club - that is 14 gone already. Gilli probably signs, we could see Hendrie, Odusina and East leave IMO.

I say we need 7 or 8 at least before further departures. Odour, Critchlow and 3 or 4 loans is nowhere near enough.

 

We have seen with Lewis that there are plenty of talented young keepers going to waste, that’s the whole point of a scouting department really as anyone can name tried and tested players, if the club want him go get him hopefully he’ll be another gem.

 

Good midfielder and a foil/sub for Cookie... A speedster will do on either wing. Back up keeper if Doyle is too old....
