We have played 442 for years with attacking fullbacks

 

Fair play for travelling a couple of hours for a friendly.

 

Seems to have gone a tad quiet today this after yesterday bolt from the blue.. Hope the delay isnt due to a few missing pennies caused by wyke's injury in turn impacting his transfer

 

Parker reckoned he was buzzing to sign. Just maybe lost his pen??

 

Could fail a medical he has had a lot of injuries

 

Might have trained today, then they do them photos, modern football.

 

Probably just a case of making everything official and getting confirmation from the FA etc that the deal has gone through. Same sort of situation as with Riley and Miller in that the deal was all be done but the club wait for official confirmation in case something was to happen.

This reminds me of that time the official twitter page claimed a major announcement was imminent, then nothing happened.

 

It's not just the fullbacks though is it? Imagine setting up with 2 attacking fullbacks, 3 out of your 4 midfielders who have the licence to bomb forward and 2 out and out strikers. Assuming Payne hasn't come here to bench warm, that's what our strongest team would look like playing a 4-4-2. I've never come across that before and it would certainly be something different. I know PP got criticised for playing McMahin out wide, McCall for putting Law out there and Grayson the same with Chicksen but there's a reason why all 3 decided to do it. Either we bring in another defensive body or play (an adequate) Billy Clarke type of striker who's willing to sit back and provide us with the extra body in midfield when we need it and play 4-4-1. At the moment, the balance we would have playing a 4-4-2 formation is all wrong. 75% of the team is geared up to attack.

On a more serious note, there’s no reason why we can’t 2 defensive minded central midfielders in a 4-4-2. We have Akpan and Wright, with Reeves and Vincelot as back-up. Then we have Payne (McCartan back-up) playing just behind the centre-forward (just as Clarke played ‘alongside’ Hanson).

 

I posted in the transfer thread that Derbyshire Live says we're still interested in Lund, that would go someway to covering this problem so maybe that rumour could have legs.

 

Our midfield playing a 4-4-2 would look something like this i presume:

If Akpan is the tough tackling midfielder he's supposed to be, he's the only one of the 6 who's equipped to do any sort of defensive work. Even if we were to switch to a 4-4-1-1 and play Payne just behind the main striker, unless we play Vincelot in the centre who shouldn't be anywhere near the starting 11, then it's probably still too attacking now I think about it, especially when we will be playing with fullbacks. I think we definitely need another defensive player to come in. That or have a player like Wright replicating the role of Law. We have an ideal set of players to play 3-5-2 or 5-3-2 though and it would seem like that's what our recruitment has been based around, which is fair enough of course, but hopefully we have a plan B and C if required.

 

Fk it. We'll just win every game 6-5 and be done with it.

Why can Wright not play instead of Vincelot (in your 4-4-1-1 as I suggested?

 

Edin just putting him through a training session first, showing him how to play.

 

Absolutely agree, unless he's planning on playing McGowan & Chicksen at fullbacks. IN which case I don't think we can accommodate Payne/ Akpan & Wright in central midfield.
