It’s a bit like eBay, should we pay £100,000 when the buy it now price is £41,000?

If true, it must be a release clause figure and if matched it’ll be down to the lad. Offering in excess of this doesn’t put us in any stronger position than anyone else.

    https://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/sport/19818983.darlington-prepare-lose-charman/

Here's an interesting article about Charman.

Apparently Darlington don't want him to go to the National League, they want him to go higher, and they've said if he knuckles down and proves himself they'll let him go as their side of the bargain.

In other words, release clause or not, they'd be upsetting the lad big time if they started playing hardball on the fee.

They've already signed a forward on loan, and are seemingly accepting that they'll lose him.

So £40,000 or whatever might be a very sensible, smart offer.

    I agree
Just thought other clubs may offer more for a player we obviously want and we would miss out

That makes me believe it’s a release clause figure.

It’s called bargaining put in an offer if it is acceptable fair enough if it isn’t offer more or back off depending on what value or what you can afford

Not necessarily, if you look at this article there's a quote that suggests any reasonable offer will do, as they've promised the lad he can move to a high level - but only to a high level.

    https://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/sport/19818983.darlington-prepare-lose-charman/

"We had tough conversations with him, me and DJ, because obviously he wants to play professionally, but it was just a National League club who came in but I don’t want him to go to that level, I want him to go higher and we told him he can bypass that division.

“We told him if he works his socks off and does well then we’ll wish him all the best and he’ll move on, and he’s keeping his end of the bargain at the minute.

I don't think you can tell the lad that, then go public with the story, and start turning down offers of £40k.

If there HAD been a release clause, they couldn't have stopped him going to the NL club in the first place.

So to me, it's unlikely there's any clause, and much more likely that they're going to honour their promise to him by letting him go to a higher level.

Maybe the other club didn’t know about or couldn’t meet the release clause.

Whats he worth then? Wyke was 250k and had banged them in in L2. This guy is below the Conference? Nothing wrong with testing water and if we go higher eventually, fine

There isn’t a release clause…at least the article didn’t say so?

They just said they were unwilling to let him leave to join a team in the National League in the summer - but they would allow a Football League move.

Bottom line is surely that IF we are in for him, a deal can be done. Trouble is that would apply to all suitors. It comes down to that combination of player's terms and the purchase price. I wonder if this is one of those with a relatively low purchase price with relatively high add ons?

I think they appealed it and lost and the FA decided to add another match on due to it being the second red of the season for him. Really stupid decision as he was literally throttled by a centre back and just pushed him off. Cook would have battered him.

So anyone signing him writes off seeing him until Feb pretty much. Not surprising with the FA. Did you see the none league red at the weekend in the Eastleigh game? Their lad got sent off for "attacking the referee"....

If £41k triggers a clause, why offer more?

it would be a clause and it 41k won’t be enough.

Sounds from that article that so far, we've played this absolutely spot on, if indeed the rumours we are in for him are correct. Darlington have literally just said they wouldn't turn down an offer of 40k for him, as long as it comes from a club higher than national league. We've offered exactly that - plus a little extra to show we mean business ;) why on earth would we offer more at this stage?
