Peter Downsborough was between the sticks when I started following City
He was excellent, since then the pick of the bunch would be Duke for me

Matt Clarke easily the best ive seen between the City ticks these last 30 years. He was England quality for a season.

Schwarzer was the one that got away though. He went on to the best bar none. Better than Pickford so far IMO.

Came to Valley Parade at 31 years of age when many thought his best days at Halifax and Swindon were behind him, yet went on to get another 200+ games behind him being a very consistent goal keeper.

He did indeed, we got him for 5k,
He came with the pedigree of having saved a Kenny Dalglesh penalty whilst representing England, I mentioned it to him onetime, and he jokingly said his career was all downhill after that.

Schwarzer could have easily gone on to get 100 caps for England if he were English, a top talent maybe even a bit underrated by some in the PL due to his national team. Got a move to Chelsea as their back up at nearly 40 I believe which says it all.

Best for me though Matt Clarke by a mile, just wish we’d have seen more of him. I didn’t take to Gary Walsh as much as some did so was always annoyed when he was first choice over Clarke as I thought he was better. But no doubt both quality, what we’d do for a selection headache like that now.

Played v Notts County at Wembley from recollection play off final. Couple of blinding saves at our end I think?

Does anyone remember Mitchell Downie? When I watched him as a kid, I thought he was the best keeper in the world - but he probably wasn't! Since then, I think Matt Clarke has impressed me the most, not only for us but I also remember him being outstanding when he played against us for Rotherham.

No contest for me either, Peter Downsborough without any doubt.

This is what The Times writer wrote about Swindon Town's League Cup final triumph of 1969: "it was Downsborough versus Arsenal and Downsborough won."

By the time they let him come to City 1974, Swindon obviously thought his best days were over; how wrong they were. Downsborough helped, almost single-handedly at times, City to an FA Cup quarter final appearance in 1976 and promotion in 1977.

He was also something of a penalty specialist and was rarely beaten from the spot.

His final appearance for City was in a 6-0 win over Crewe Alexandra on 28 April 1978.

Edit: I believe this is the photo of him coming onto the pitch for the Crewe match, with both teams forming a guard of honour:

Have to go with whom I remember well -- so it's Tomlinson for me. As has been mentioned before, Schwarzer wasn't around long enough, or he'd be at the top.

On the day Jon's father, Bobby Gould, was interviewed on the pitch by some hapless reporter. She said something like, 'You must be so proud of your son playing in this famous stadium. Have you ever been here before?' He replied, 'I scored in the 1969 League Cup final.'

@Bronco@Bronco, do you recall Bernard Fisher? At The Shay, must have been 1963/64 ish, he made a fantastic triple save from a Halifax penalty in the closing minutes, to ensure us a win. Lives long in the memory. Pushed it out twice and then, whilst on the ground, punched the next rebound over the bar. I've never seen a better sequence of saves from a City 'keeper.
