I think you need to be realistic - we are a L2 side and players with a decent history aint playing L2 football.

If someone bags 17 goals at L2 level then we should be looking at them if available. Heard of Paul Mullin? Look him up.

PS - another problem is know it all fans writing players off we are linked with. Lyle Taylor, Tom Eaves, Matt Crooks, Matt Godden, Billy Kee etc etc.

 

Ah, making another bloke that so far has 1 very good season to his name.

This reminds me of the clowns banging on at us to pay money for Tom Pope after his 1 good season.

Anyway, Andy Cook has a decent history and is a realistic option. I think that was my original point.

 

So Andy Cook is the only striker we should target/sign this summer.....ok.

Wow, I must have a touch of amnesia.

 

Whenever a striker is mentioned it always goes back to Cook - almost like we cant sign both and Cook is all we need.

I know folk dont really think that but their obsession with bringing Cook into every striker debate is beyond odd.

 

He's a better option than Matt or Stockton imo. I never said we only need one.

Bring in Cook and compliment him with another target man type to allow for rest/ rotation/ injury and then bring in another completely different type, such as a McAleny that can play a few different forward positions.

 

I'd definitely take Cook, and if he signs permanently I'll be happy with that signing.

However, Cole Stockton had a better season than Cook has just had, and is younger, and Adams knows him, and he's just been promoted.

I'd rather have Cook than Matt, maybe, but again, Matt has had a better season than Cook has, got closer to promotion, and both Stockton and Matt have played at a higher level for longer than Cook has.

At 30, Cook's excellent goalscoring record in non league remains the most eye catching aspect of his career. Now don't get me wrong, he showed a lot in his time at City and I rate him, but not enough to insist that we sign him permanently.

I'm convinced Cook was on a fair wedge at Mansfield, hence having to loan him to competitors, and I'm not sure he's worth more than Stockton or Matt.

 

We need at least 6 attackers so it's not one over the other... just get the lot of them in and let them fight it out for who starts

 

Really not feeling it for Stockton. He's done very little in his career to date to suggest he can consistently be a threat.

For me he looks like one that hit a purple patch alongside others around him and collectively it led to a good season rather than performances that are sustainable.

I'd like to think we have other targets on the radar than Stockton or Matt.

 

There are better strikers out there than Stockton and Adams will know that. In 12 months time we should be preparing for a league one season and Stockton isn’t a league one player. He’s another year on his contract at Morecambe and you’d be mad to pay money to buy him out of it when there are better free agents.

 

Stockton is a L2 player. And thats the league we need to get out of. He wont be the only forward we sign. Oh and hes out of contract.

 

I find that comment bizarre. If you are good enough to play in a promotion side you are good enough to play in league one albeit not necessarily a promotion side in league one. If we were riding high then arguably any player you then sign after Christmas you would have one eye on whether he could push you on in league one

 

Agreed. Stockton ticks alot of boxes. Capable, Adams knows him, free, wants to come according to reports. Cant ask for much more. Fatten up the options with Cook and someone else and im ok with that.

 

I'll just trust Adams. Definitely not feeling the Stockton love in, but if he is a piece in Adams jigsaw then so be it. The problem with transfer windows is you sign one player and people judge the quality on that one signing alone, not on how he fits into the master plan. Sign them all, keep it quiet and announce them all together.

Matt/ Cook, Cook/ Stockton, Stockton/ Matt - who knows which of these would work. What I do know is if Bowyer hadn't been such a stupid arse and had played Vaughan & Doyle rather than Vaughan & Donaldson then we might possibly be sat in L1 now.

Yeah I saw he was out of contract in 2021, my mind is still in 2020. I still disagree though, he’s an average league two player, 45 league goals in 152 starts with 99 off the bench, less than a goal in five. Guthrie has similar stats, 54 league goals in 184 starts and 71 sub appearances, just over a goal in every five. Both of them have included spells in non league.

If you’re buying players to get you out of the league you’re rebuilding, yet again, next summer. Sign players who can get the team out of league two and then continue to develop and get out of league one.

Cole Stockton is, on paper, a one season wonder so far.

 

We arent buying players like Stockton. They are free. We are bringing them in to create a competitive squad to get us out of league two.

Not every player we bring in will be league one ready. If we go up, we will need to add to what we already have. Basic football economics!

 

They were, but his decision meant sacrificing Doyle and that was a MASSIVE mistake in anyones book.
