The thing with the salary cap is that although it is the same for every club, how they distribute that money between their squad is entirely up to them. There could be some clubs who have a number of players on considerably less than the average, which frees up more for players they might want to attract. There probably won't be a great deal in it to be fair, but if it's a case of signing a new contract at your existing club on less money, or moving to another league 2 club, still on less than you were previously but 200 quid a week more than your current club are offering, some players are obviously going to take it.

The clubs will call the shots now more than in the past and with Covid also being a big factor with football finances, in the lower leagues especially, the chances are players with little chance of going up a division will be more than likely looking at a reduced contract.

 

I dont think we can say “we are desperate for him as a top tier target” as that would drive fee up. The mans free in the summer too so they have to sell if he’s refusing an extension. I actually wouldnt be surprised now if we did get him! Plus harry kewell saying hes needed by the club tells me they are trying to keep him. Not definitely keeping him but trying.

 

They're keeping their cards close to their chest. No point in them saying Novak is out for a long time, it would bump up the price of any potential replacement coming in. They were saying that McAleny was not their most important target but thats just good business sense.

Yes reading it again they could be Kewell's comments you're correct, I still believe McAleny is the one we're after but if they can bring an improvement on McAleny in I'll be well delighted.

I think we are playing it just about right, declaring interest but not the be all and end all hearing at least 2 more in before the window closes and interesting that latest news on Novak 'might not be that bad' - should know more tomorrow.
Think the management just need to focus on Southend match, its a big one as can put some distinct daylight between us and the bottom or close the gap again. I know everyone would like to see a win but I equally think it is vital we dont lose, would love to see Rowe get off the mark before we return to VP

 

Well the salary cap has certainly done that. Agents realise clubs only have a finite amount of spending power, i think squad players will really suffer as first teamers will still command a half decent wage.

 

What the last six games have shown is we can compete with anyone, i'm that confident i expect us to win tomorrow hands down. And my gut feeling is Novak will be out for a fair while, the club doing the right thing by keeping things to themselves.

 

I know what you mean but Southend will be desperate to keep in touch tomorrow and whilst I would love a comfortable win I am not quite a confident as you that it will pan out that way

 

Both ourselves and Oldham have games tomorrow night so expect nothing on transfers until at least Weds/Thurs
