January 2021 Transfer Window

If players are available who will strengthen in key positions they should be added but with a view of consolidation this season (outside chance of playoffs as a bonus) but next season these players make a core of a team going for promotion next season.
However complacency could really scupper us, there are players we need now due to the poor squad so some compromises may need to be made for now with the view of moving some of the dross on in the summer

 

It has to be done in the confines of the salary cap there isn’t that much room for manoeuvre.we need a bit of quality in two or three players this window and then wait to clear the way for more in the summer

 

With time on my hands I always read opposition fan's forums for post match comments. Here is one on the Port Vale site which made me laugh

" Interestingly no Guthrie in Bradford's squad tonight. He has the right attributes to play the lone striker role and at 27 is a better age. Is he prolific enough though.....probably not "

 

We were suckered into buying him last January. Lets hope someone else does the same next month...

 

Is he really injured though, or are we protecting him with a view to a big money move next month lol....

James Hanson went up the leagues. Yes, look at him now but he has had a good career and I would rather an injured Hanson than a fit Guthrie. Just saying!

 

I agree we will aim for improvements.

Realistically we need five new players but we’ve 1/5 of the cap left, so ~300k. Do you go then for quality or quantity?

For me, we need a stronger RB and right footed winger/midfielder. I’d also like someone to compete with Sutton and Novak but we aren’t making 300k go very far if we do all that are we....we need to move on DMH, Guthrie and BRE if we can to give us more flexibility, but for all I agree we need to improve on what we have, we are short in several areas and are gonna be disappointed. Maybe signing two quality players rather than five average ones is preferable.

We’re not gonna be paying fees, especially given this season isn’t certain to be completed. We might convince someone to sign on a free if they are paid up by their current club, like Morais did with us and Bolton. We will probably have to take a punt on new loanees too.

But if we want a striker to improve on Novak, an experienced forward who will get you a dozen to 15 goals a season, that alone will take up a good chunk of what we actually have available.

With Ismail made of glass and DMH not a footballer, Clarke’s been playing on the wrong side. That has to be first area they address as we just dont have any options at all - even Samuels has been tried there.

 

The drought came while he played for Bury and AFC Wimbledon, hardly going "up the leagues" but yes, Hanson was better for us that Guthrie has been.

 

Yes we need to think long term but its ridiculous to say this season is a write off. We are only 7 points off the playoffs with more than half a season to go. When we went up last time we were 13 points off with 7 games left.
On current form since T&S took we will finish 4th. Obviously we need to continue to put in good performances on the pitch and recruit well in Jan but to say its a write off is wrong.

 

I couldn’t name names, but there’s always been good talent in the national league. I’d like to see our new scouting team identify and pursue some of the best talent in that league (lower to mid twenties in terms of age).

 

Going up this season should be low down on our priority list.

We need to build a squad that not only challenges for the top two, but can also hold its own in the league above. This set of players except a couple are League 2 at best.

 

Wingers or pacey attackers to play in the 3 behind the striker I reckon. At least 1 but I think we'll get 2 in.

You might not have noticed by they has been some strange results in football this season in all leagues around the world.

 

But you told us Bolton would walk this league with their transfer dealings So they can’t be that poor to put 6 past them or does it just fit your statement because we held them to 0-0 .

 

When I say moved up I mean he ended in the Championship.

Drought while at Bury was when he was loaned out from a Championship club in Sheff Utd at the time. Collecting Championship wages and can't blame him for maybe taking his time to get use to Div 1 again but a lower Div 1 side.
Drought at Wimbledon was when if I remember correctly they managed to stay up that season and he help set goals up for that to happen.

Guthrie has no excuses mate.

I would loke to see us offload a few players , to create more leg room in the salary cap.
BRE , DMH and Guthrie. The Don and Zeli , we are stuck with. Longridge we have not seen enough of to judge and i would keep as cover for Wood, who it appears will be off to pastures new, surely a new contract would have been signed by now.
Can we send Samuels back, not good enough to even make a cameo appearance last night, when we needed a goal for the 3 points.
Inward , i would like to see that elusive pacy striker that can put the ball in the net, a midfielder that can score might also heip.
I like Callum Cooke , but his finishing is woefull. Another battling midfielder to cover for Sutton, who has been really good last few games. A decent winger and another centre half. Wishfull thinking , this is the January transfer window, a time of year when our business is usually sub standard, maybe this time with the new recruitment team ?
