so modern slavery doesn't exist here?

the things is the main aim of the protest is essentially police reform, a worthy and perfectly achievable goal. in americas case, this has already started to happen so that point is gone already. The issues around history etc are largely secondary, i just like discussing history. again, nobody wants to change history, just teach the true version that wasn't just written by the winners.

Please, if you don't watch anything else today, watch this. The guy concerned is Peter Norman. Look him up and read his background. An inspiring human being.

With my unstable bowels i have to be careful when going out. I've had to pee in some uncomfortable places on the odd time i've been caught short but never have i done anything like that. Funniset i saw was a drunk guy pee down the side of a police van when i worked on the doors, couldn't understand when the copper arrested him.

I really don't know. I see two concepts colliding, I know that I agree with both, and I just have to live with the contradictions.

On the one hand, multiculturalism has great benefits, whether intellectual in broadening our minds and experiences, or the purely earthy and sensual, as in helping do away with the stereotypical bland English food! We need to mix with other cultures if for no other reason than to get rid of the unknown.

My people began their nursing training in 1949, and it was not unusual to meet patients, usually elderly women in their 70s or up, who didn't want to be treated by Dr. X because he was Egyptian, or Indian, or African. Interestingly, a nurse's colour didn't seem to matter -- being of the same sex won out. The patients had little to no experience of non-whites, and simply were afraid of the unknown. At Staincliffe the matron once got all the nurses and students together one day and told them to prepare the patients: the doctor who would be seeing them was a doctor like all others, but his skin was darker. It went alright. Along the same lines, a family friend was a Mrs Wilson, who lived across the street from us in Batley. My people had a one-up one-down terrace with an outside loo, she was grander -- her place was a bit larger, and the loo was inside! But she hadn't been farther than Manchester in her entire life. It was a grand thing once we had moved down to Amersham and she came to visit, all on her own. As some posters have noted, it was a far different UK in the 60s and 70s; it was different again in the 40s and 50s.

On the other hand, the saying "When in Rome, do as the Romans do" also applies. Unless you study the culture of the place you are moving into, and adapt, you will never become a local. It can be as simple a thing as remembering that when you eat in England, the tines on your fork go down, unlike in Europe where they go up. But do that, and the other things, and soon you will find that you'll be considered a native, and people will complain to you about all those "damn foreigners" ruining the place!

And so, I don't think there are any easy answers to your questions. If you force me to pick one of the two above concepts, I will come down on the "When in Rome..." side. But I would prefer to try and combine the two.

You could probably get her off by reading passages from Mein Kampf.

This is quite good if the link works:

In Bristol where they are removing the name of a slave trader from their theatre, like everywhere up and down the country they have a queue of people waiting outside of Primark for some of Bangladesh's top sweatshop product.
