Well, we academics are mostly harmless, even if a bit noisy, as long as you leave us in our universities and set a minder or two on us whenever we escape! Some, however, are rather more dangerous. I wonder what he'd have to say about Winnie, and her condoning of necklacing, and participation in the beatings of some opponents? Girls will be girls? This sort of blindness to facts does nothing to help the cause, and everything to harden prejudices.

An example of what I give to be the hypocrisy on display. Skynews and BBC are reporting on an 'attack on 2 police officers'.

It's not the main story, the video isn't included and no mention of race is made. The video is below.

The footage shows a gang of 5 black men violently attacking a white police office, taking much joy in the process. A black female office attempts to intervene. Her hands are pushed. No other obvious physical violence in display towards her.



Now imagine the races of all involved are reversed. Imagine the outcry, the rioting, the rage. 5 white men attack a black police officer. A white police officer intervenes and receives only mild retaliation.

So I'll say it. Whilst this is primarily an attack on the police, its also racially motivated.

This country, I genuinely think, is in for very dark times in the coming months.

It's real simple. If you have a problem with black people or the BAME community then just say but I trust you don't and if you don't then just shut up, learn and educate yourself and their issues.

Of course this attack is bad but these are thugs like the thugs that go to some football games at times. Let's not point out every single issue. Just ask yourself what are you going to do? how can you make a difference because for me I fully understand the issues for the BAME community and taken myself to LISTEN AND LEARN!

Your wife is a teacher. Maybe ask her to run more black history lessons at school or talk openly about the slave trade and how the past has formed our present. If she can't maybe she needs to just educate you on the subject.

It’s not done just because you have a rant and say it is - there’s some intelligent people putting forward their views and I for one am enjoying reading them.
Essentially we can all agree that there’s problems in our society, but unless a broad spectrum dialogue is undertaken, then issues will never be resolved or grievances avoided.

He's a troll. I don't know who the Mod's are on here @SimonW ? But I'd ask that any obvious attempts at trolling on a thread as sensitive as this, are managed. I'd like to think that regular posters on here know me and recognize me as sensible and respectful, open to all debate and opinions, a bit of banter etc. I'm not one for over the top censorship, but this is a hugely important issue.

With literally one exception, every other poster on this thread has exchanged their views respectfully and with a degree of empathy and a willingness to learn and challenge opinions.

Fair to him, I’ve read a few (and I’m talking less than a handful) of Fordy’s post and thought they were quite well written and informed ... I think he’s more accustomed to getting his own way and is somewhat child like.
Don’t think he’s a ‘troll’ - more of a spoilt brat, used to getting his own way.
Regretfully I come up against Fordy types on a daily basis.

 

Another interesting read , the Royal navy and The war against slave ships 1808 - 1898 . Gives an account of the campaign to drive the Tradiing of slaves between Africa - mainland Europe to the American / south American mainland .

The Statue of Baden Powell is to be removed from Poole harbour , the local council have removed it on Police advice ,this is because of his tenuous links to Racism . What the hell is this happening to our country . Yet another example of the hysteria surrounding the hypocrisy rife at this current time . The problems in America get more serious by the day , the current removal of statues in the south and any thing to do with the confederate army during the civil war are being defaced and torn down , local militia now protecting remaining statues , yet the statues of Sherman who drove a locust like swaithe through the south from Richmond to the sea are remaining , the Statues of Custer - Rhodes and other American generals who devistated the indigenous Native American tribes in the brutal plains wars of the same era are OK ?.

Every post on this subject you have taken yourself not to understand where the Black/BAME community are coming from.

We have all seen the attack on the police man and it's not great but I see your post as a point scoring exercise.

Said before I admire you as a poster but this subject isn't one to defend, defend and defend or score points. It's to learn and understand why the black community feel as their do.

I take it you're not black? So learn how they feel. Stop making out it's a competition. It's not! I hope you will make a difference!

 

The point of history is that we learn from it. We can't change it by re-writing it, or removing parts of it. It should be taught, in context as a tool for improving our future.

I agree with your statement @Storck , he was from an era that was totally alien to todays society , the problem still remains at what point do you draw the line ?. The worry now IMHO is social media , the instant something happens it goes worldwide , this outlet is open to all sorts of doctoring and cutting out " non relevent " parts of conversations . There is a video going round at present of a Police officer getting assaulted by a mob , the witnesses did nothing to help just sat in their car and filmed the incident , the BBC did a 3 second mention of it . Its viral worldwide now , this country is tettering on the brink , there is a mass rally in London on Saturday in order to " protect " our heritage . a lot of ex srvicemen and football firms have been rallying to this " cause " , the flashpoint will be at this gathering , i far for the future of our country in this present climate .

 

Who'd have thought that our way of life could depend on the likes of Millwall fans...?
