I'll travel 260 to drop up you off in Scotland and leave you there and I won't be driving like @Bigrod aka Miss Daisy.

Here's a good example of the differences between living in the UK/Europe, and over here. 200+ miles is nothing over here -- depending on the direction I could still be many hundreds of miles away from the provincial border... And on highway driving, my BMW will happily do 700km/420 miles on a tank. 15 minutes to stop and stretch every two hours max. is the way to go, though. Even with that, I've found that 500 miles is the comfortable limit for a day.

As for the greater question, I have a few comments. First, that I do believe in the old saying that rules are for the guidance of wise men, and the blind obedience of fools. This is not too different from the idea that airline captains must follow their companies standard operating procedures, but can use their discretion when needed. Diverging from the rules is alright provided that any subsequent enquiry can be satisfied that the diversion was justified.

Second, what he should have done is offer his resignation when this first became known. There is no obligation to accept the resignation, however, and so the status quo could have been maintained. But each side would have been seen to have done the right things: the one in offering to resign, with an explanation, and the other in either accepting or refusing, on the grounds that the explanation was or was not acceptable. Instead, we have the current mess that isn't really satisfying in any way.

As Keefly says any man that would unnecessarily expose his 17 year old niece to a potentially life threatening disease must be of questionable character he appeared arrogant and unfeeling about the thousands of other people who were in the same situation he was How does he think they coped without putting numerous other lives at risk
Plenty of other people had the same options he had but chose to take his advice and stay home says it all really

The problem with your first point is that any parent who has had or worried about getting C19 have stayed at home, locked inside their house. That's what everyone has been doing. So, no, Mr Cummings, parents don't understand what you did.

As an aside, imagine being asked about single parents and replying "single mums". Is this the 1980s? What about us single dads you numpty Cummings.

I enjoyed listening to Boris blowing his vuvuzela at the start of Cummings statement to try and distract us from what he was saying.

If he had come out and immediately apologised for how it looked and made people feel and THEN set out his statement it could have worked.

Instead the wall he was building between him and the rest of the country was being built as we watched.

I think he has come out of this looking like a defensive fool. And that's damming considering his senior decision making position at the very top of Government.

 

I thought Cummings came across well but he should have come out with it days ago. But the media are so biased at the moment they drag up just about anyone on the left ignoring anybody with a different view. For an example the BBC interview with the woman from the Observer who printed almost complete falsehoods on Saturday saying he returned to Durham that he was seen whilst up there and a suggestion that the police visited his parents about Cummings they didn’t. Not once did the BBC interviewer mention that.
Cummins went against the spirit of the Law and should have apologised and should step down but the standard of gutter journalism is very poor

 

With all due respect he wasn't the average man in the street off on a jolly jaunt somewhere. He was the man that decided on the stay at home policy. He should have done that.

It was far more riskier to drive 260 miles and expose his family to the risk of an RTA or breakdown, than it would have been to hire a nanny if needed to care for his 4yr old.

 

I thought he explained everything very well, Cleared up all the holes the press had whipped up, Did what he thought best for his family and nothing wrong with that, The press must have known about the clause he used but chose to ignore it in the rush to be first getting him out of a job, There are more questions about the low quality of our media than of Cummins actions

 

Might suggest to Rhodes that when fans come back to the VP that we allow @Park bantam out at half time for a 30 minute drive then back in so he can test his eye sight to stop him making out we have played good instead of utter rubbish which we would have played like.

Problem is Park, this is exactly the sort of thing Cummings should be good at, its his his job. He's made what was essentially a bad error of judgement on his part even worse becuase of his stance. Regardless whether he thought he was somehow right, his response has been nothing short of disastrous. Looks like he ain't gonna back down and the media will dig their heels in resulting in a war of attrition. Just what we needed eh?
