This is people’s daily struggle and I am glad this is highlighting the issue to the government. Or hopefully it is. No one cares until it is them in that position.

I don't think the government have been perfect, and bringing provisions to support the self employed and clarity to how businesses/employees should approach the restrictions in relation to what's 'essential', is key. But I think they're handling it as well as any other state that I've seen, and I'm not about to stick the boot in when so many individuals are acting like knobs - making an already mammoth challenge, even more difficult.

Interesting article in the FT yesterday. Certainly backs up what a lot of people have said that this virus has been in the country for a good few months undetected.

Exactly. This is a logistical nightmare and, given the enormous range of issues, I think the government are getting most of it right. And they are constantly amending/correcting/clarifying, which they should be, to deal with a fast moving situation.

    The government have been poor.

Stop being a blue nose. The government have sent mixed messages, been slow to react and their solutions have many holes.

Oh and self employed still not sorted.

    It's not good enough.

You're never happy, but you also never commit to specific position. You just flip flop and react to the latest thing. I've saved your post which makes clear your admiration for how Trump is handling things. Let's see how that plays out.

Wherever the government have been poor, the general public has been worse

That states we will find that out from testing how long it’s been here. Sadly testing isn’t happening enough yet for that to be the case. Can see lockdown lasting 3 weeks minimum

Ha I am not saying Trump is great but 2 Trillion and end date given.

I just feel Boris didn't take this seriously in Feb and now we are suffering. Don't deliver things with holes in and mixed messages.

The media think Boris is weak and every time they tell him to do something he does it.

So, this comes as no shock to me.

Backtracking already because you've seen the strong criticism that Trump is getting over his most recent statements..??

I’m no fan of any political party or politician. But I’m also a realist. Within a little over a week, the government has had to respond to a global crisis of unprecedented proportions, rush through legislation that outstrips anything we’ve ever seen, implement a level of social restrictions that weren’t seen in nearly 6 YEARS of WW2, make a provision for massive scaling up of the NHS, mobilise the military, try and bring stranded brits abroad home, provide budgetary support to industries across the country that are again, unprecedented – all in the context of a global economic meltdown - oversee mass school closures and provide guidance that people seem to expect to cater for 60m different individuals and their respective personal and work situations across the country. Its no surprise that they're making a few mistakes and some important things aren't happening fast enough.

The general public are being asked to not shop like twats and stay at home wherever possible and they can’t manage it.

All I'll say is thank God we don't have Jeremy Corybn and Dianne Abbot trying to steer us through this.

I just think one party shouldn't be trying to steer us through this.

Things are getting missed and Boris didn't act soon enough.

I don't think it IS one party. Can't remember which politician it was but he basically said that all parties are mucking in and recognizing that this isn't the time for political point scoring.

It wouldn't surprise me at all to see greater restrictions in London soon since it sems to have become UK's epicentre for the epidemic.

The role of the 'opposition', in times like this, is to raise concerns where they feel more needs to be done (as has happened regarding the self employed), to 'support' the government in its overall response and to avoid any political point scoring. Mostly, this is what is happening.

Equally, the government should be taking on board any suggestions from 'opposition' parties and again avoiding any political point scoring. Again, mostly, this is what is happening.

I am trying to avoid commenting on whether or not certain individuals or parties would or would not have managed the response better or worse because it is, for the most part, idle speculation and, let's face it, in times of war (and we are in a war) some of the most unexpected people rise to the occasion.
