It's about time you stopped viewing the economy like a household budget. We recovered from WW2, and created the welfare state and social housing at the same, by government-led Keynesian stimulus. And we can do it again. The one thing that would prevent that from happening is listening to the Thatcherite monetarist crackpots who have been strangling our economy for the last decade.

Your barmy red paranoia surfaces yet again.Who said anything about socialism? My post, and the FT article, are talking about a return to sensible social democratic politics/economics, as practised by both parties in government from WW2, until Thatcher destroyed the consensus with her 'no such thing as society' Friedmanite nonsense.

Yes, something has to be done for the 5million or so self employed, freelancers, gig economy workers or decorators who so far have been ignored in the Govt's thinking. They are an enormous part of the working population. If not, these people will have to continue to work whether they are plumbers, locksmiths or those on zero hours contracts. If they are not working, they are not earning. Siddiq Khan was saying earlier that many of the tube trains were rammed earlier today creating a great environment in which to spread the virus. He asked the question how many of those on the tubes were essential workers - nurses, doctors, police officers, care workers etc - and how many were others - freelancers, self employed, zero hour contract workers - who were being forced to travel to work to earn some money.

This hole in the Govt's thinking needs to be plugged quickly imo but I don't believe that the concept of a wider UBI is the answer other than maybe as part of the short term expedients.

As a short term (3-6 months) measure I think it would be simpler and quicker to implement than all this 80% stuff .

Here’s a list of premises that have to shut.

    https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/874732/230320_-_Revised_guidance_note_-_finalVF.pdf

And here’s the guidance on when to or who can leave home

    https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/874742/Full_guidance_on_staying_at_home_and_away_from_others__1_.pdf

    The key line.

    ● Travelling to and from work, but only where this absolutely cannot be done from home

It seems pretty simple to me, the plumber should only do the job if they can practice social-distancing, if they can’t, then they shouldn’t be working.

It’s why I’m at work today, despite not technically being an essential service.

Have your employers taken extra steps to ensure social distancing measures are in place? Is there hands sanitiser at exit and entry points? Have they scheduled extra cleaning hours?

To be fair to them, we’ve always had hand sanitiser points, and we’ve been instructed to use them more recently. Nobody from outside the company is allowed on the grounds, any delivery drivers speak through intercom and are instructed what to do.. They’ve been very slack on other points, particularly social distancing, but that seems to be happening anyway.

You should see the pictures of the packed tubes in London this morning.

The problem is he didn't and doesn't do what he needs to do which is shut London down.

I said this before that it really isn't the time for one politician party to be making key decisions as things get missed. Boris' presentation skills are extremely poor and too many mixed messages. Times like this you need to be crystal clear. Say a list of stores or things that need to close e.g. Estate agents, hairdressers etc make it clear or state that they will be a list at www.??

What about the self employed? The single parents? Unemployed? Not saying everyone should get hand outs but have everything sorted before delivering messages.

You want people to stay at home but people have bills to pay and while everyone is using moe electricity & gas what you doing to get the utilities companies to help people out at this time of need.

3 weeks but the peak is in May, so if the NHS can't cope in March & April then what?

At times like this clarity is urgently needed.

Other updates because Boris can't deliver messages is that:

If you are separated from your ex and you have children under 18 they can be collected and move households.

I don't recall what the PM said or didn't say on this matter. But it was Gove who got this wrong initially by saying kids had to stay wherever they are currently and then had to apologise when he corrected it later.

No argument really, SOME of the messaging is confusing, but they're having to make very, very difficult decisions on the fly for something that's never been done in the history of the country. I'm prepared for some of that messaging to be bumpy. To me, the underlying principle of what we're trying to do is clearer and for the most part, people know enough to make sensible and responsible decisions.

That's democracy US-style for you. Every country deserves the politicians it elects!

Somebody on the radio played about 15 or so clips of what Trump had said and tweeted recently on the corona virus situation in the US. Some must have been said at conventions or conference because there was a lot of applause and cheering for what he said. But if he sticks to his guns, the US is in for a major shock over the next 3 weeks .. or corona virus will have disappeared as quickly as it arrived (that last part was a Trump comment)!

Sensible and responsible people will no doubt take sensible and responsible decisions. Unfortunately there is a significant proportion of our population who are neither sensible nor responsible and thus who knows what they might do. And in these times, we have to legislate for the idiots and the irresponsible.

Equally there is a sizeable proportion of the workforce who might all be sensible and responsible but who are being encouraged if not incentivised by the Govt to ignore or circumvent the Govt's own advice. They are the 5 million people who have to go to work because they are self-employed, freelancers or on zero hours contracts and have to go to work to earn some money. The Govt has still to fill this 'loophole' with some financial support for these workers. If not, the tube will continue to fill up with these non-essential workers

Trump getting out the positives and delivering messages @abbomf@abbomf has requested.

"The chance of dying is ... about 0.45 percent – very far from the World Health Organization’s [global mortality] figure of 3.4 percent."

The WHO's figures are just fake news. The US numbers are just great, beautiful and the best figures in the world! ;)
