Black and Asian female MPs (even once you exclude Diane Abbott) receive, on average, 35% more abuse online than white female MPs. That indicates a deeply engrained issue, and this trend cuts across political lines.

Diane Abbot specifically receives 31% of ALL abuse directed towards any MP. This isn’t just a reflection that she’s ‘stupid’ or otherwise, there are plenty of MPs that aren’t particularly bright. I’ll hold up Richard Burgon from Labour as a great example. But these numbers are several orders of magnitude apart.

To be clear, I’m not suggesting that the content of everything people are saying is always directly racist, but there’s a demonstrable subconscious bias going on that makes black politicians receive more abuse than white politicians.

 

The data exists, and this cuts across political parties so I’m not jumping to conclusions.

I think the race debate in this country is tainted by isolated occasions. We had the Bernardo Silva incident that seemingly nobody could take a balanced view on (a heavy polarisation of ‘lock him up and throw away the key’ or ‘it’s just a funny drawing’).

Racism exists in all kinds of forms, almost all of the time non-maliciously and subconsciously, and I think in some form possibly 100% of people are guilty of racism on some level - this is a problem that we have to highlight and address more often as a society.

I’d far rather live in a society that checked itself against racism maybe slightly too cautiously and educated what constituted prejudice so those people’s lives can genuinely improve, than underplayed their hand for fear of it being seen as a conspiracy theory.

 

But @Tony Wilkinson makes a fair and valid point and it could easily be construed that it is you using the ‘firewall’. I agree with those who think Dianne Abbott is not fit for government yet this opinion has nothing to do with the colour of her skin.
Very easy to throw the racism angle into any discussion, Corbyn has the same problem now when being accused of anti semitism by the likes of Rachel Riley, hes not really anti semitic.

Unfortunately they are all playing the " one upmenship game" they are proving once again they don't have a clue what the ordinary Joe wants, as a father all I wanted was the best for my family that to me meant a job enough to pay of my debts, a annual holiday and enough spare to enjoy a Saturday night out with the wife, it's getting farcical the sooner its over the better.
