Is the guy at the EFL setting these deadlines the same one that sets our early bird ST deadlines?

The EFL Board met earlier this evening and, after a long and detailed discussion, determined that Bury FC’s membership of the English Football League be withdrawn after the deadline passed at 5pm today (Tuesday 27 August) without a successful resolution.

Despite repeated requests to its owner Mr Dale over a sustained period of time, the necessary evidence in respect of how the Club would meet its financial commitments, has simply not been provided and, as a result, attentions turned to securing new ownership at the Club.

At its meeting on 24 August 2019, the Board agreed a short extension to 5pm today (Tuesday 27 August) to enable Mr Dale and the Club to explore the possibility of a proposed sale with C&N Sporting Risk Limited, with Mr Dale having accepted their offer. Following due diligence, C&N Sporting Risk Limited opted not to pursue its interest.

Therefore, having fully considered all available options, including a number of late expressions of interest provided to the EFL, the EFL Board has unanimously determined with enormous regret that Bury’s membership be withdrawn.

The EFL Board had maintained that there could be no further suspensions to the fixture list and that these ongoing concerns and the integrity of the competition were a significant factor in the decision.

Recent events have highlighted how decisions taken at Bury FC over the last few seasons have caused the Club and individuals close to it significant financial distress and there are a number of matters which, in our view, will require further investigation.

League One will now comprise of 23 Clubs for the remainder of the campaign and relegation places in the division reduced to three, which will result in a full complement of 24 Clubs in 2020/21. A discussion will take place with EFL Clubs on the consequential impact in League Two when Clubs next meet in September 2019.

Debbie Jevans CBE, EFL Executive Chair, said: “Today is undoubtedly one of the darkest days in the League’s recent history. The EFL has worked determinedly and tirelessly to avoid this outcome and it is with a heavy heart that this situation has been forced upon us.

“The EFL has to place the integrity of our competitions at the heart of every decision we make, and we simply cannot allow this unacceptable situation to continue or countenance the prospect of postponing further fixtures.

“I understand this will be a deeply upsetting and devastating time for Bury’s players, staff, supporters and the wider community. There is no doubt today’s news will be felt across the entire football family.

“No one wanted to be in this position but following repeated missed deadlines, the suspension of five League fixtures, in addition to not receiving the evidence we required in regard to financial commitments and a possible takeover not materialising; the EFL Board has been forced to take the most difficult of decisions.”

43 out of 51 businesses Steve Dale has been associated with have been liquidated yet he was allowed to take ownership of Bury. Absolutely baffles me.

The EFL have reinstated the suspended notice of withdrawal on Bolton so they have 2 more weeks to try get the Football Ventures takeover deal signed off. It sounds a bit like that could be the end if it does not go through.

Such a shame but sadly coming for years, this hasn’t just jumped up out of nowhere. Finances in football have been shocking for a long time, this could easily have been us. Thankfully atm all we have to worry about is wanting the manager sacked after one league defeat, but any club is susceptible to this in the future it could be the first of many.

Feel for the fans, and it’s a shame as it’s an away day I’ve always enjoyed and made the effort to attend. Probably not play them again unless some Phoenix club does a Wimbledon.

    Probably Bolton next unfortunately.

It still could be us and lots of other clubs:

They're two sides to a fence:

    1) An owner that buys a club on the cheap for a return but unable to manage debt.

    2) An owner that loans a club money and then wants to pull out or want his money back.

The true way to measure owners in my eyes is if they're looking to improve the club by adding assets, making improvements, taking the community forward etc

If unable to do the above then they should sell up quickly. Parky was saying that Anderson should of sold Bolton when in the Championship and I agree. If you can't afford to run the club or take a hit in the pockets then you need to get out or seek investment ASAP.

Not baffling to me at all. The EFL is fronted by our former director Shaun Harvey, the tit responsible for the current abysmal League Trophy format, as well as trying to promote a League Three consisting of mainly Prem B teams. He’s kept quiet throughout this saga and to my knowledge has never given answers as to why these unscrupulous characters keep passing the leagues so-called “fit & proper persons test”

It's embarrassing that two league clubs were on the precipice and now one has folded. Would be sick to my stomach if we we're Bury today. Feel for the fans, that's what it comes down to, your club just wiped out like that.

Glad Rahic wasn't sole owner of us, imagine that catastrophe.

Really sad news about Bury FC. Unfortunately they've just been run into the ground over the last few years.

There are a lot of lessons to be learned for lower league football teams from this.

Another worrying thing is that it sets a precedent, if we can let one team go tits up then why not let others as well? I don't want to normalize teams being kicked out of the EFL.

Another somewhat awkward line of inquiry is did anybody within Bury FC, fans included, speak out when they were obviously spending beyond their means over the last few seasons? When they were top of the league did anybody stop and say "hang on a second, how can we afford to run away with the league title?".

Rochdale spent about 30 years in league two without feeling the need to spend a large amount of money on players they couldn't afford to try and turn them into a league one or championship outfit. Is it time that we as fans accepted that when we've found our level we need to accept it and not expect miracles?

Really heartbreaking for their supporters and staff. I hope the fans can get together and reform a club they can get behind. For many, the saturday ritual is massively important, and it’s gone, just like that.

It is such a sad day, and every club in the land should not only feel the pain of the fans of the two clubs, but seriously question the FA and the EFL who have allowed thieves and carpet baggers into our clubs?

In my view we sold our football soul when we allowed ie FA to split the PL and the Football League. Then the PL has been allowed to do virtually anything it wants, and the football league sit under the table waiting for the crumbs! Now we have a whole army of ‘entitled’ PL owners and fans who have no interest whatsoever in the effects of them having everything and throwing the rest the crumbs and be grateful oh and by the way there are conditions to the crumbs we let you have.

It is up to the fans and supporters of the football league to not only demand better governance of our league, but also transparency of the individual clubs accounts. It is alright ppl saying Bury Fans did nothing while the spending nilly willy on the credit card, went on, how are they suppose to call their owner out?

This is the shock wave for all football fans in this country, I have no idea how many clubs are in a similar position, but there will be a few.

My understanding of Bolton’s position regardless of the EFL decision to start the clock ticking, is the Administrator was saying there was no money left to operate from Wednesday, so unless somebody has put money in to keep it going while they find somebody to buy it, they could be liquidated today. My knowledge of this is sketchy, but the administrators have a duty to not allow any business to operate without funds.

No, it's not far from it. Football is about living a dream and aiming for the sky.

Football fans don't need to speak out if transfers are being made but what clubs need to do is have more open communication on their future plans. Football is a community thing. Fans are understanding. Liverpool European Champions spent 4m in the summer but announced they're increasing Anfield. Norwich spent 4m and explained why. Just be truthful.

The issue is the managers at lower leagues can't coach or they don't have enough quality coaches around them. Raw talent comes in and they will get sold on to bigger clubs nearly straight away. That's fine as that spins the wheel but let's look at our club for example can you really name a player that's gone on and improved? A player that might of been worth 10k and now worth 100k for example? I can't.

Nothing wrong with buying players as that's football but the issue lower leagues clubs have is they lack a football identity. Again I will use us as an example. How many different formations have we used this season? What's our style of play? The best clubs have a footballing identity and they don't change it for anyone. Having a football identity makes player recruitment easier because you should know what kind of player you want fitting in to your style. Then owners can find managers that fit into that style if they leave. Again using us as example.. gone from Parky to McCall, to Grayson, to Collins, to Hopkin, to Bowyer - every single one of them have a different style of play and its like going from one end of the spectrum in some of the cases.

Lower clubs buy cheap then buy twice and confuse matters, that's the problem. Football is a simple game.

It would do more to lose a Chelsea or a Man City than Bury or Bolton, that would bring this crazy money roll that they're on back down to Earth...
