If it is that fabulous value for money it should have no problem standing on its own feet instead of leaching from the taxpayer for its supply of money

Of the little terrestrial TV I watch it's probably all BBC. Radio is more my thing and but I only really listen to BBC 5 live and 6 music. Not sure I could justify keeping the licence fee based on my usage but others will probably get more out of it.

In what parallel universe is the BBC programming 'poor'.
I'm shaking my head in disbelief that anyone can say that. Even with the competition from Netflix etc, a massive proportion of the quality TV programmes are on BBC. And that's before you include 6 channels of high quality radio in the equation.

The BBC's mission is to inform, educate and entertain.

If I had one criticism of the BBC, it is that they spend too much of their budget (our money) on entertainment that replicates what many of the 'paid' (through subscription/advertising) broadcasters already provide.

I doubt my simple analysis of the BEEB will send it to a new subscription model any time soon.

It is fair to say that without public money to fritter away it would not exist, In its present form I could see very few paying for the below par programmes it pumps out,

I get the Radio Times. I see far more rubbish listed on ITV and other commercial channels.

Give some examples of this poor programming.

We get the Radio Times delivered every week on an annual subscription. Funnily enough, lots of other people must buy it too, otherwise it would go out of business.

It's much quicker and easier to see what's on all the channels - terrestrial/freeview/cable/satellite etc across several double page spreads per day in the RT than to wade through the channel guide menu on our smart TV or on a newspaper website. Plus you get good articles, film reviews etc.

I don't buy the paper Guardian, just the online version.

Significantly, neither you nor @trevor@trevor have come up with any examples of poor BBC programming yet, I see. Bold statements, but no detail.

    Frontline fightback
    The Tournament
    Clean it, Fix it
    RuPauls drag race
    The apprentice Australia,
These are just from today!!! and are just cheap rubbish with no quality made to fill the schedule rather than give quality viewing, The fact they are on the BBC is a waste of taxpayers money

    The Repair Shop is excellent.
I'm not particularly into game shows but Pointless is one of the best ones.
MasterChef is watched by millions and is very popular indeed.
EastEnders - I'm not into soaps but this is one of the most popular in the UK, second only to Corrie.
(Edit) The Outlaws is quite good, actually.

Most of those are daytime TV which is pretty rubbish whichever channel you choose. Let's face it, most people who sit watching daytime TV aren't the most discerning of viewers and therefore don't want, and wouldn't watch a load of expensively made quality programmes. And Monday night is hardly representative anyway. The range of BBC programmes at the weekend is much better.
Compare tonight with ITV, which has Emmerdale, two lots of Corrie and the atrocious I'm a Celebrity for its evening fare. Awful.
And I see you've conveniently overlooked Mastermind, University Challenge, Frankie Boyles New World Order, Great British Railway Journeys, Fake or Fortune and various historical/documentary programmes on the other BBC TV channels this evening. Not to mention all the radio channels.

I'm sure they all cater to a certain taste. I can't comment because on their quality because apart from the odd episode of pointless I haven't seen any of them for about 10 years.

I don't think they're worth paying for or would be descried as excellent television though.

By the same token I don't think I'd pay for the output of ITV or Channel 4 either.

An isolated list of the programmes on a single BBC TV channel on a Monday night isn't really a representative list of the BBC's output though, is it? There are several other TV channels plus all the radio - national and local.
