I’m a tw@t because I don’t wear a poppy? Quite frankly I couldn’t give a flying fck what you or anyone thinks about that, it’s nobody’s business what I do with my time and money. But let’s just pretend I do care. I was always brought to pay my respects quietly and dignified, which I do. I don’t needs a poppy or any other gesture to do that.

And for what it’s worth, the British Legion (and others like Combat Stress) are a fantastic charity, my own family members have received excellent support from them in the past.

like posting pictures on FB of a lockdown shopping trip and just slipping into the text that you collected a neighbours prescription etc etc. Maybe i’m just a miserable bastard but why not say nothing, hell, not even post that irrelevant crap anyway (I realise this comes from one that posts plenty of irrelevant crap on that other thread, before anyone says owt!)? or did you just post the FB entry as a vehicle to show the amazing selfless thing you did? You then question how selfless it really was. of course doing nice things is great, it’s just putting it out there for yourself, that it then takes away from what you did in the first place, surely it’s about the other person - not you.

In w4nkerdom it ranks just below holiday pictures with a ‘not too shabby’ comment and above a gofundme request to sponsor a foreign excursion to raise money for charity.

That said, before social media existed, I did once clear a couple of badly overgrown allotment plots with work colleagues on a ‘team-building’ day. In a quiet moment I sometimes wonder how much happiness (and vegetable produce) my selfless act has generated over the following years.

 

I take your Lib Dem MP and raise you a Lib Dem Councillor who was so pleased to be taking part in Ramadan he decided to have a plate of bacon before the fast.....

 

What about people running to raise money for a charity eg Cancer charity etc. Are they virtue signalling?

Posting pics on FB etc of them before or after the event.

Look at me running on a sunday morning, putting myself out to raise money for the charity/cause.

They care for the topic in hand and in general wear pink or other coordinated colours to show they are part of that event. And usually it gets press and TV coverage of some sort.

Shame on them eh? Or not?

Let’s just make something clear.

Running a marathon, 99year old bloke doing laps of his garden - Effort.

Wearing a hoodie and/or posting videos on social media - No effort.

 

If they both raise funds for the same cause etc why are you so against it? Intrigued.

 

The morons going to public places with camera phones to record clapping for the NHS aren't raising money and are openly ignoring the laid down law of the time.

I think I am quickly becoming the most miserable and cynical bastard but there’s been some FB activity since the care home outbreak on skye. We’ve had selfless posts about all the cakes my company took up there for the staff and how I went to put flowers up there and I think other people should too. I think that latter one the post got removed, thankfully. There have been two deaths, which is incredibly sad, but I’m not sure flowers outside is a great judgement call for those still fighting it and if you are not family. Bang it on FB though, get the likes.

as i said earlier, lovely gestures are great and we need people doing nice things (maybe not unnecessary travelling to the location of an ongoing outbreak though) but when you blast your deed all over FB the cynic in me comes to the fore. Who are you really doing this for? Wouldn’t a message from a worker at the home saying ‘wow, a local company called such and such came and delivered the staff etc cakes and stuff to keep us going and a bit of a morale boost. Thank you’. I mean, maybe i am so wide of the mark with my judgement on this, but to me, that kind of scenario is much more fitting given the situation.

An acquaintance, I'll phrase it at that, asked on the missus's Facebook how she could donate £25 to a food bank...not exactly difficult to establish a method for doing that without the self-promotion.
