Loved my job as a joiner and worked my way up to own the business, still on the tools as well as running the company.
It does take its toll on you.
Lucky that i have paid into a private pension since i was 20 and hopefully can start to take a back seat. and let my lad carry the can a bit more.
Still over six years to my state pension

    It has moved on. https://www.wypf.org.uk/firefighters/2015-fire-home/active-index/when-can-i-retire/

It seems as though the Police pension is actuarially reduced if they draw it at 55, with 60 being the unfettered option. https://www.lppapensions.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/Police-Pension-Scheme-Retirements-Employer-Guide.pdf

Basically we all know that any physical job becomes more demanding with age, the wear and tear takes its toll, the vulnerability to health related conditions increases.

I started a private pension in 1983 and initially was supposed to retire at 55 but unfortunately not worked out as planned.

My husband was a chippy. He is plagued with back and knee problems. He was able to retire at 65, and even that was high. I would say to anybody it is never too late to start saving for when you can’t work. Very hard to do when we were younger, but we managed.

    Most definately..
I set up the company pension scheme a few years back for my employee's . they really did not want to pay into it, £0+ years is along time off to a 20 year old.
You have to stick at it and hopefully it pays off.

A far less arduous occupation, but l have a friend who is a retired Dentist, and had to retire early due to significant back conditions. https://www.dentistsprovident.co.uk/news-and-blog/news/record-high-work-related-sickness-absence-includes-musculoskeletal-problems/
Wear and tear in people as they get older, means that they often struggle to perform as they did when they were younger.

There is a very interesting article in The Telegraph this morning “Broken Britain” written by Ben Wright. How our ‘insane’ tax system stifled wages and penalised ambition. It is much more than taxes though. It all makes sense. It doesn’t lend itself to left or right politics, but lays out why we have ended up here, and solutions.

It suggest a trade agreement with the EU. I agree, but it should not involve any extra’s like sovereign decisions that the British ppl make.
BTW it will take about 1/2 hour to read, but well worth the time.
