Well I enjoyed that match and the atmosphere. Yes we know we don’t have quality, but every player put a shift in, and we didn’t get any luck and couldn’t capitalise on the penalty. There first ‘goal’ looked handy, but we can’t expect anything else fro refs. Cools heads were called for when we scored, we need to install that in the players, calm it down then have another go. I actually thought Sunderland were poor to be honest, and unless they improve they can forget about automatics and probably playoffs. Good game management at the end, frustrating though.

Compare that performance to earlier matches. However, we just have to start clocking up points.

 

So to stay within the rules their income must be about £30m, unless there is an exemption due to their recent relegations

Second half performance gave me renewed optimism for the rest of the season ahead.
We were clearly second best in the first half, but a lot of fight in that second half, and penalty miss aside, good performance from Payne again. Shame there was no experienced quality on the bench that we could bring on.
First time I've left Valley Parade for a while after a defeat not feeling down.

Just watched the penalty miss by Payne. Great save from JM but hell, why does Payne need a touch from the rebound? A first time tap in and it's 2 - 2.

 

From my viewpoint in upper kop he was beaten to the ball by one of their players just toe ending it away.

 

O Lord, the club have to have a bit more to offer than that otherwise they deserve to be relegated.

 

I didn't think the defending was 'bad' for their second. There was a stalemate from an aerial challenge, and someone happened to be there to get off a snap shot that blind sided the keeper and sneaked into the corner.

If anything, there was a hint of misfortune.

 

Ignore the rules, get promoted, get fined £2m and receive £6m extra in TV money or whatever.

 

When you look at how easy it was for wigan and blackburn and rovrum to come stright back up then you know the gap between the championship and league 1 is a chasm that can only be breached with some serious spending on some quality.
Sunderland looked average at best but over the season will do just enough with the high earners they have left.

I honestly had never appreciated how a poor coach could literally ruin a team especially on the fitness front. We must have been so far off the pace in the first few games compared to how Hopkin has got us running around its actually shocking me.

I'd honestly be prepared to give any of the summer signings a clean slate when they come back now knowing how unfit and uncoordinated with their team mates they were. It wouldn't surprise me if many of this season's injuries were down to our awful fitness (or lack of) training.

 

Much better performance today which I think we deserved a point from.

O'Donnell -6- another great save to keep it at 1-2.
Mellor -6- best game for us, thought he defended well and got forward okay too.
McGowan -6- decent enough.
NKP -4- shocking.
Wood -5- defended well struggled going forward.
Scannell -5- threat early on but faded out and a stupid sending off.
O'Connor -7- MOTM I think today, playing out of position and played well. Excellent finish too.
LOB -6- okay, struggled to make much of an impact.
Payne -6- decent game, should've scored either the pen or rebound. Still the only player who looks like making something happen.
Miller -6- had their CBs on toast early on but when they sat deeper he was ineffective.
Ball -5- struggled out wide imo.

We're in big trouble no doubt, but I've got a bit more hope that Hopkin can keep us up if he gets us playing like that every week.

 

I'd guess that the powers that be would struggle to fit in existing contracts to financial fair play. It would probably apply to new contracts. After all, they were probably financially fair when he signed the contract or something like that. There'd be a legal way around it I reckon.

With the £30m in parachute payments from the PL this season plus their 30k crowds, they shouldn't find it too hard to balance the books.
