I can see us signing shepherd if am been honest , there’s a lot of people saying he’s not good enough etc but they play a back 4 not a 5 so completely different player in our system

 

Also another id look at is kabia at Grimsby & is jatta out of contract ?

 

Jatta has another year on his contract (I think). He’s never done it in L1, will have minimal resale value and has a questionable attitude. Plus he’ll cost a fee. Can’t see it happening.

 

Like the look of braybrooke who’s on loan at chesterfield too, just watching the play off game. Think he’s on loan from Leicester so they will probs have a look at him in pre season

 

Leicester will keep him themselves for league 1 next season.

 

Really not sure what folk see in him.

I'm assuming that you’re referring to the away match 18 months or so ago? If so, he was reasonable enough but we had a crazy five minute spell and made him look like Pele. I wouldn’t be croaking to shell out a fee for him anyway.

He’s only ever done it in League 2. We’ve got someone on loan in largely the same boat - and he’s been a total flop. It would be a huge gamble IMO.

 

If you are referring to Jatta, he was L2 poor tonight imho, as was Cookie in the other game .

 

I think I saw 10 minutes of the first leg, and he was AWFUL lol

I am not in any way saying that's proof he's rubbish, just that he happened to be awful for that short period

Naturally, that's all I've seen of him.

 

I've seen a heck of a lot of players have a good game against us, doesn't mean i would sign them off the back of it.

Remember that 16/17 year old at Swindon last year?

Holloway brought him on at 3-1 and he absolutely murdered Halliday (I think) and changed the game.

I was wondering where he has got to, turns out he signed for Norwich in the summer and spent the whole season playing in the under 21s league.

A real waste of time

 

It's gonna be interesting. I doubt our budget will be much bigger than last year, especially since we haven't sold a youth prospect in a while. Attendances have increased, prices have risen, and more season tickets have sold than ever before, not to mention the play offs probably brought in half a mil, but we were working on a big deficit this season, so I guess it will be more about bridging that gap to make sure our losses next year are minimal.

However, we've half a decent squad in place this year that are 'top-half' L1 level at the very least, whereas last year we only had Bobby and Sarce who you could class in that bracket.

So, we have a strong foundation to build on. Plus, it's fair to say we've increased in status from a newly promoted L2 expected to fight against the drop to a team likely to push for promotion to the Championship, which gives us more quality players to choose from as no doubt many knocked us back last season for that very reason.

Then, on top of that, we've opened a lot of eyes with a positive spotlight on the club once again - players are like supporters, many of them only watch the big leagues, so plenty wouldn't have noticed us in L2. For sure we will have caught the attention with our big home gates and atmospheres - 2nd best supported team in L1 behind Bolton and above Cardiff, so this with everything else I just mentioned, will play in our favour this year when competing for new signings.

I've seen a few big names mentioned on here as potential links but I'm not sure that's how the recruitment team will be working. If you're gonna predict anyone, you should probably make sure they have previous promotions on their CV and supporters of past clubs sing their praises for work ethic, because unless they're another Metcalfe with potential to grow into valuable assets, then I think it will be more of the same this summer. Power, Tilt, Touray, Neufville, J. Wright etc.

Add to that nucleus and we'll be even stronger.

I think we need more quality on the ball. I thought Lapslie once again drastically improved us when he came on for Metcalfe on Thursday after 60 minutes. He was a large part of the reason we got into the game and finally started creating chances to put Bolton under the cosh. So that's gonna be an interesting one.

I don't think it's a coincidence either that our early season form where we created plenty of chances and looked good had Tommy Leigh in the team. He played the ball forward and has a pass in him, but I'm pretty certain the tiff he had with GA after the Blackpool home game ran deeper than what the gaffer said when he played it down as we didn't see much of him after. I'm positive it was down to lack of work rate which is non negotiable for anyone who makes the team.

Therefore, despite how improved we looked every time Lapslie was put in midfield towards the end, I think we'll definitely be looking for a creative midfielder.

For sure Kelly will go this summer and since we got rid of half the squad in January - we will have plenty of spaces to fill in the squad so there's gonna be a raft of new signings. So, I expect them all to be upgrades on the players we had last season.

I wouldn't be surprised either to see Humphrys go either. He just never looked the part, certainly not as a striker and you can bet he's one of the higher earners too.

More winners, more quality, more creativity, and more fight is what my money will be on, so from the 'out-of-contract' between the Championship to L2 - who fits that bill?

 

Agree. When Metcalf came into the team he looked to go on the half turn and drive forward. Due to his inexperience, he became predictable and started to lose the ball in dangerous areas. Someone with that experience but driving forward is definitely the type of player we should be looking to bring in. As you mentioned, we did well in the autumn season by moving the ball quickly to the wingbacks and playing first time passes into Bobby or Sarce. Then an early cross into the box, either near or far post. We attacked at pace and had overlaps on both sides. Once we were sussed out, we had no alternative, but persisted with long diagonal balls.

 

Remember that lad that played for Grimsby was it McAckren ( Spelling) he ran the show against us twice a couple of years back . Everyone thought wow , …he’s still playing his trade at Grimsby in L2 !

 

What about Odusina? Brilliant against us for Hartlepool, delighted when we signed him, turned out to be complete pants!

Better off being loaned back to Swindon, under 21 football does nothing development wise. The amount of players we've had on loan with an under 21 background have generally disappeared without trace.
