Not overly fussed about Shane Duffy. He'd play that central CB role in the 3, sitting very deep. Pace in behind might be a worry, sounds like he cant move much these days and Charlton fans unanimously said Macca turned like a cruise ship, having Baldwin as the quickest CB frightens the life out of me. Seemingly hated at Norwich from the sounds of their lot, sounds like his best days are well and truly in the rear view.

Rather have Welch and Wright for that central role to be honest? He'd be much cheaper, potential sell-on if he kicks on too and if not there wont be a massive contract on the table for Welch.

It seems a very strange one to me, if indeed there is anything in it. Even given his age and recent lack of game time, I'd imagine it will still cost a decent amount of wages to bring him in, money I'd far rather we spend on securing the services of a quality CM.

Exactly that. If we need an experienced head in the spine of the team, CM is the glaringly obvious spot that needs some cash spending on it, well before another experienced CB is in the building.

Currently got Pennington (31), Wright (31), Baldwin (29), Gillesphey (30) as proper CBs. If we are still pretending Connolly is a DM then fine but he is a is a 28 year old CB. If Touray covers LCB he is 31. We do need 1 more for numbers playing a back 5, but it's not like we are crying out for experienced heads back there.

Very much in the Max Power mould. Maybe Sarce ends up playing the attack minded central midfielder.

Not a rumour, but this lad might win the medal for most enthusiastic signing of all time

If he did sign, I can see one of the senior CB's on their way, probably Pennington or Joe Wright. Suppose it depends on Welch signing too but 5 senior CB's, plus Touray is fine I think.

I think someone would have to go because that line needs some legs in it as it stands, let alone with the oak tree Duffy coming on board. Pennington and Baldwin aren't exactly speedsters but they will look like it playing with Duffy, Joe Wright doesn't exactly get up and down at any great pace.

But tbf it's City Vent, their track record lately has been pony.

Problem is finding a CB that has pace, who can pass a ball, is strong in the air and has good positional sense. They dont tend to play L1 football. The quick ones that do play L1 football tend to have low IQ.

Yeah finding the horse for the course is a problem and in L1 you have to just tick as many boxes as you can, i dont think it's possible to find 3rd tier players who can do it all. But tbf we have Baldwin and Macca who on the ball have one thing in their locker and that's to ping it long, so the middle CB probably wont be offering much on the ball.

Duffy would fill a gap, but there's a glaring gap about 15 yards ahead of him on the pitch where that money would be better spent in my eyes.

Some interesting thoughts on players this person would go for if you have X to read the thread.

I am concerned at our midfield recruitment now. Of course the window is still open but at this stage, a further signing is likely to be a young loanee, who is likely to be unproven at this level.

I don't expect Connolly to work out and be anywhere near the level of Power and Cartwright is not likely to be afforded the bedding in period Metcalfe had due to the lack of numbers in that area. Sarcevic and Lapslie shouldn't be anything more than emergency measures in that position for different reasons.

I appreciate its difficult (expensive) to replace two top level L1 midfielders but failure to do so is likely to undermine the rest of our good business in other areas this summer.

It's been the weirdest part of the summer in my view. I think Power said it and either GA or Sharpe (cant remember which) said that Power said to them about a week after the PO defeat that he wanted to go back to Wigan. Obviously they sat on it and made the decision that they did.

But from that moment, to me you make replacing your captain and only experienced midfielder your priority number 1. From mid-May ish we should be looking at how that engine room looks going forward.... but 5/6 weeks later we bring in Callum Connolly and say he's the replacement after barely playing midfield for the best part of a decade. I just dont understand how in that time you end up at Connolly?

Did we just not think about scouting a Power replacement and had no list? Were we too late to get into the market for like for like replacements? Did we maybe think about a complete CM strategy change once Metcalfe left too? It seems really afterthought-y on paper. Cartwright has potential for sure, but he's incredibly inexperienced as Metcalfe was last year (although Metcalfe played more minutes at Chesterfield than HC did at Falkirk). As you say the bedding in time was there for JM, but as of typing, that squad space isnt there for HC. Still a good 5 weeks ish of the window to roll, but so far it's really weird.
