That’s what Prem clubs do. Either do a transaction like Metcalf or have them perpetually out on loan to several different clubs and paying part of their wages . We took the option that would likely pay dividends which left Everton and City both happy.

 

Sad to see Metcalfe go as I thought he still had a level to go in terms of consistency that another season at league 1 could have brought but if we have got a very good fee for him then we have to take the money. Use it to bring in 1, maybe 2 players and also it should be a good advert to players looking to come to the club that they can develop here, get noticed and the club will be fair to you.

Ultimately with the gap in finances between us and top end league 1 and Championship we will need players like Metcalfe to be sold on to bring in extra revenue.

Slight concern is that we've basically got to bring in a whole squad depth of CMs with both Power and Metcalfe going so not surprising we've been linked with a lot in that position. If we do sign Adam Phillips it will be interesting to see whether we see him as a CM or as one of the 10s, if it's one of the CMs he's probably the replacement for Metcalfe.

On one of our targets, Barnsley fans say Phillips is purely a central attacking midfielder. Wouldn't play in a deep two or a wide attacker role. Change of shape?

 

Barnsley fans saw Humphrys as being wide on the left. They were wrong.

 

Tbf he did play wide left all season for them, would make sense to anyone at the time he was coming in to play on the left.

 

Very sad to see Metcalfe go. I understand the reasons and the risks but I would have hung on another year when the transfer tag could have been a lot higher. I hope we don’t use all the money on veterans​

It wouldnt surprise me. £2m is nothing really for a Championship club to take a punt on a promising young player

And presumably he wanted to go so we wouldn't have let that happen for a paltry fee. I'd expect a decent amount of money given that we still have a couple of years on his contract.
