One way of getting a signing done...

 

Lot of people expecting Smallwood to sign a new contract but don’t think we’ve got the option on him anymore as that was exercised last season, and he’s on a fair whack! As much as he’s been brilliant this season there probably a case of could we get a younger player in the same mould for less than 3.5/4k a week

 

I'd be surprised if we don't offer him a 2 year deal or at very least a 1 year deal with a appearance based clause for an extra year, he's one of a few players in the squad with proper league 1 experience and I don't think his leadership should be underestimated. There's clearly huge trust between him and Alexander which would be hard to replace. For me I'd look to find a younger version of him who can learn off him next season with the view to this player being the starter the season after.

 

I can see them keeping him for pre-season to see where they think he is up to and any loan will be late on, if we do bring in back I would imagine Palace's plan will be for him to do well until January then recall him and loan him to a Championship side. If they were to win the FA Cup and get Europe I don't think it's the craziest thought that they could keep him for squad depth

 

Thing to keep in mind with Tayo is, he's now class as an Over 21 player for next season as he turned 21 last November. So for Palace to keep him around even to use on matchdays to pad a bench, they'll need to register him.

The O21 rule/squad lists means PL clubs can't really hold onto these lads after their turning 21 season for too long. Mellon is going to be in the same boat at Burnley, in that they need to be loaned out or used because they aren't going to see a great deal of play if not.

 

Seems like he's very much "one of the boys". He was the same on Saturday night if I remember, he was the first wave of lads out with Leigh and Pattison.

Tbf it seemed like they were making it up as they went along and there wasn't any plan tonight, so a player grabbing the mic to get some chants saved it a little!

We don't know what's happening with out of contract players and we won't know until next Tuesday at the earliest. Smallwood might decide a new project is best for him? The suspense .....

 

I think we need 2 for sure in the DM role, suspensions are real but also time is ticking. Richie is 35 at the end of 2025, the pace of L1 might get to him at some stage. We did get every little bit we could out of Smallwood this season, but there wasn't really any alternative either? At some point, he's going to need to share the workload for his own sake.
