If we do sign AC I predict a new club record for free kicks conceded. The dross we get refereeing in L2 will have a field day proving how they're not intimidated by a big name.

 

About to sign for a club who are in the CL then all of a sudden he’s willing to drop to league 2 .......... I hope it’s true but I just cannot see it as for his scoring record ........, he was only really ever prolific at Newcastle everywhere else he did ok but how many of these kinds of players get loads anyhow ?????
James Hanson did well for us but he was hardly ever prolific was he ?????
More of a player who causes issues for defenders while letting everyone else around him cause the real issues
Like I say cannot see it being true but if it was and the wages are right then I’d be for it

 

I was in touch with Mark on Saturday and he said his comments to the fans at Avenue were taken out of context.

He is aware that we are chasing a surprise signing, but he never mentioned someone coming down from the PL nor does Mark know the identity of the player

I agree that if it is Carroll and he's coming here on something like a grand a week with a decent goal bonus then it could be worth a punt, but only as an addition to what we have now, not as a replacement for Cook. If it's true about him being willing to play for peanuts, it isn't really a major coup for this level either, as I'd hazard a guess any team in the league would be able to afford him if they wanted him. Like you say, it wouldn't be the 'wow' signing that has been hinted at and just like the Long rumour, I don't feel in the least bit excited about it.

 

Now show me his goal and await bonus payment? Also appearance fee!

That sounds more like the kind of reasonable thing he'd say. Unfortunately a few fans got giddy from there and the whispers gained their usual arms and legs and became something else!

It's a tough call.

 

Guy who can play 40 games in a season, guy who fails medicals tough call as well. There are pros and cons to anything depending on your point of view.

Since you are obsessed with the logic of what level they have played at let’s go down another route. If we were told we’d just had a £300k bid accepted for Kabongo Tshimanga from Chesterfield would you not be excited and rather Andy Carroll because he’s never played at a high level? Better go tell them championship clubs out there who were monitoring not to bother as you can just get Andy Carroll for free on a grand a week.

 

If we get 50-60 games between Carroll and Angol, we're going up.

 

Everyone knows it's total nonsense, all these links since something Mark Lawn may or may not have even said have been utter nonsense. But on Carroll, he's more likely to just play for a club to earn a living still because he's pretty well known to not actually be very knowledgeable about the game as he's never been a football fan.

He told a story on i think it was a league of their own or a sports panel show like that, that when Liverpool were signing him, he asked for a pack on the club for the flight over as he had no idea about anyone in the team, didn't know who Dalglish was either, his agent had to fill him in on the taxi ride to the ground. Think it was Stewart Downing or Joe Cole, some other England lad from a similar time said the same, he just isn't a football fan. Done alright from it at least, his mansion in Essex is about the same size as our training complex, pitch in the garden looks in better shape too.

 

I’d prefer Long

Carol has a massive heart, but he’s been on a downward curve for the past 10 years (hence being linked to league 2). Not just in quality, but fitness and injuries. I’d be worried counting on him to lead the line or be a rotational player. BUT IF he’s mended himself, what a signing! Total battering ram, winds up the oppo and bags of experience. We’d be the talk of the toon!

 

Very big if, there is also the possibility of both been injured and if we replaced Cook with him that leaves us with two young lads who were squad players at their clubs last season.

 

Surely we'd be happy with Harratt as third choice?
He just got promoted out of this league with Port Vale.
