Sheff Weds reporter for the Sheffield Star says that many of the players and non-playing staff have not been paid on time. Some staff were paid £700 for May but they say a majority weren't paid at all for May and had notice at the weekend that their June pay would likely not happen. Of the players which haven't been paid for 2 months in a row (if they get nothing today), they can effectively hand their notice in and in 15 days will be free to sign elsewhere.

Awful to watch this happen to a big club like that. Not sure if/what the powers that be can do other than slap them with embargos.

Although horrible to see, I've always hoped we'd benefit from something like this happening to another club since we lost Simon Francis during admin for what turned out to be absolute peanuts.

Id read the high value contracted players had been paid just to prevent that exact scenario. I think I posted a link from a Sheff paper?

Wednesday are already subject to a transfer embargo for the next 3 windows. And it will continue even under new ownership. That's a huge risk for anybody thinking of buying the club but of course will keep the price down. Whether it changes once a new owner starts the. ODT process and can be renegotiated is a possibility albeit a slim one. The ultimate responsinility for how this pans out might rest with some of the players and their agents if they choose to bugger off and sign elsewhere.

The EFL could always impose a points deduction at some stage which would be the nuclear option. But I suspect the objective of the EFL will be to penalise the current owner rather than a future owner. At the end of the day, Chansiri is the one who created this problem for everybody including the EFL.

Sounds that way. A Sheff weds fanbase account similar to a City Vent type of account (so take it with a pinch of salt, its not confirmed) have said the players who were on the released list all weren't paid along with some U21s and the odd squad player. All the key players ended up getting something.

Although it sounds like Rohl is off to Leicester and will take his staff too. If they've not been paid for 2 months, I dunno if staff have the same rights to walk away as the players would?

I'd say they would have the same rights because their contracts have been broken by their employer

Only gonna get worse for Wednesday, can only see a full scale boycott of the club having any effect. Short term pain might be a relegation, even two but if thats what it takes to get rid of Chansiri and start afresh? Hes literally killing the club.

It's how bad things get in the short term I suppose? They cant sign anyone for 3 transfer windows, and even if Chansiri sells today, that's in place for the next owners. Not ideal. They cant offer more than £7k a week to anyone during this embargo, which in the champ isn't going to get you far at all, I reckon some top L1 clubs probably offer that as "going rate".

You have to basically know it's going to be a terrible few years where you are going to lose millions if you are looking to buy Wednesday. Best case you are in L1, maybe a few U21s develop because they in all likelihood are going to have to promote a lot up. And when the dust clears, you have a base to build a promotion hunt back to the CH? Hopefully? But lets be honest, people who buy football clubs are businessmen and they know the longer they wait, the cheaper the price will be. It's only going to get worse before it gets better.

I watched a podcast with the Maguire guy, the football finance expert. He said Chansiri started wanting £300m when the club is really worth £30-40m.

The rumour is Chansiri has borrowed money against Sheffield Wednesday for more than the £30-40m so he can't sell for that price. Maguire states nobody knows where Chansiri has been getting his money from.

Seen what this type of ownership has done to clubs like Oldham, years of misery and it looks the same for Wednesday. I certainly wouldn't be putting money into the club via supporting while he is in charge.

The guy is nuts. There's a Wednesday fan podcaster who said on twitter he's heard Chansiri wont drop his price and seeing things like Villa selling their womens team for £50/60m is only backing his claims about it's worth. Deluded if true. But nobody has a clue how much he has in reserve to keep going like this?

Really hope this one isnt another Bury and someone steps in at some point.

I cant believe less has been made about this in the media that there has been. It's a huge club and you have to go looking for the news yourself. Sky Sports barely mentioning it, BBCs football page doesn't have it a headline article on it anywhere.

They cant sign any player that costs a fee - whether transfer or loan. They can still pick up free agents.

    Here
Chansiri's family controls the Thai Union Group, the world's largest producer of canned tuna. The Chansiri family is estimated by Forbes to be worth $575m as of 2020.

Yes, sorry thought it put that up there. Free agents and more importantly, their agents, will all know Sheff Weds can only offer £7k per week at these players. I wonder if that £7k includes bonuses or if they are separate?

Like, is the most they can pay a player £7k a week all in, app fee, goal or assist fees etc etc? Or can they offer that as his wage and the given like £3k appearance fee and try make bonuses ridiculously high to make the contracts a bit more Champ standard?

I’m surprised because all three have transfer value , I thought he was a “ smart” businessman . Why would he let them go free? Maybe he’s playing the brinksmanship game and will pay them up in the 15 day window? .

Those 3 above are different as their contracts expired yesterday, so they have no need to hand a notice in, they are free agents as of today. Talks were on-going says the Sheffield Star, but when they hadn't been paid since April, it sounds like all 3 are looking elsewhere.

Paper making it seem like the higher value players were paid something in May so they aren't eligible to terminate. A SW fan account is saying that it's well known that a fair few of this squad are on way too much money and know full well another team wont give them the contract SW have. So they are left in a stalemate between staying and hoping it gets solved, terminating now and hoping you get your money within 15 days and can carry on your big contract, or walking away but knowing you are walking away from money that wont be match, but they'll at least have a contract that they know will be honoured elsewhere.

    Chansiri game of chicken.
