Does throw another question at our scattered recruitment. We moved to the diamond on boxing day and still signed two more loan wingers in Costelloe and Nevers to go along with Banks and Periera. Loading up 4 of our loan slots to wingers when we don't use wingers anymore, surely in the back of Hughes head he is thinking we will eventually drop back to a 4231? Otherwise, it's a lot of misused players and money.

Eisa and Oliver seemingly only had one good game in their spell which was Salford, and neither have really flattered since. Chapman, Banks, Periera, Nevers is being told to chase for 5 minutes rather than any positional play and probably throw Costelloe in too who has only ever been a winger all wont fit into this system. Just seems to me like a lot of wasted money and spots on the squad if the diamond is the long term plan. We've got 24 outfield pros at the minute and 5 or 6 of them either have no place in the tactic or like Chapman and Nevers, might get told to cover out of positions slots either as the 10 or striker whilst we run a game out.

Didn't someone point out in the matchday thread that within the 18 involved in Tuesdays game, only one (Nevers) was a loanee.

That's banks, Costello, Pereira, critchlow (admittedly injured) and probably someone I've forgotten, just here hanging about at the moment which will be doing neither them nor our finances any good

    I wasn’t comparing “ technical ability” , I deliberately said “pace”.

It’s pointless leaving someone on the halfway line if they don’t have pace.

I think his problem is that he's not striker and he's not really sure where he should be. Quite a few times on Tuesday I saw Cook, Hughes or Hodges speaking with him about where to be and to get closer to Cook.
We really don't need Derbyshire out for a while or our options are either someone playing out of position like Eisa or playing Oliver and I'm not sure a Cook/Oliver partnership will work.

Same answer as I gave earlier. If the person left on the halfway line doesn’t have pace , it’s a pointless exercise. Banks may have more ability ( which I like) but he doesn’t have the pace to occupy a defender or two on the halfway mark.

Why could he not play in the place Gilliead or Smallwood had?

He certainly has the engine to get up and down the pitch. He likes a shot (which is on up on either of them) and has enough pace to get back plays likes a tackle.

He could easily play in either of those positions.

It's kind of the wrong debate imo. In our current formation Banks and Nevers wouldn't be competing for the same position.

Nevers could be coming on up top to stretch the game instead of Eisa and Banks would be on the right or left side of midfield.

Don’t doubt that but if we are protecting a lead with 20 mins to go and Nevers is on the field already, who would you stick on the halfway line to stop two defenders going up for corners….Obvious isn’t it?

I mean, a bit of a unique scenario you're presenting there!

Is it…? He brought Nevers on at Stevenage for the last 20 odd didn’t he? Ideal to stop Evans’s land of the giants coming up from the back?

Isn't that a mute point though Kevin given its something that we never bloody do (but should) anyway?

If that was the scenario then fair enough maybe, but given he is just been thrown on for ten minutes and appears to have the instruction of "runaround anywhere" then surely banks with his better control and game brain is the better choice

What I meant by unique scenario is you selected one specific scenario that could occur in a match and that would probably be better suited to Nevers. There are others that you could have chosen that would better suit Banks.

Thanks Kevin, I would suggest he has quite a lot to do to earn a new one

He won’t get one imho. We were largely stuck with him Simon, like Threlkeld. Unable to move either due to injuries. Not their fault but that’s football.
