RIP John Docherty

I remember the Docherty era fairly well, mainly for the agricultural football on show. To be fair that style of football was more prevalent back then so it was more accepted, but was completely different to a couple of years prior and the football played by the 87/88 squad.

For me, the passing of time may have dimmed my memory of the Docherty years.
I remember the football being woeful but I dont think he was helped by the fact that his time came so relatively soon after the nearly season. I remember that he did sign some v good players- Babb, McCarthy, spring to mind. He also signed Torpey who I never rated at the time but went on to have a good career in the lower leagues. Balance that though with the signings of 2 players who would walk into my worst City 11 of all time - Darren Morgan and Alan Dowson!
Regardless anyway, what we are seeing now is well up there, given the overall standard we are playing at.

Some bad games during the Doc years but my god this season alone is worse than anything he produced

 

I remember one game at least where the whole crowd booed whenever we played it short and then cheered when we hoofed it. Happy days.

 

He was a 1000000% better than Vadaine Oliver

 

As has been said already he brought Sean McCarthy to the club which if I remember correctly was after the relegation from the old Div 2. Felt like a real statement of intent at the time (£250k or so wasn't it?) but alas didn't work out as we would have hoped.

250k, 30 years ago in the 3rd tier. What would that be worth today? 1-2million? Could anyone ever imagine us spending that kind of money in league 1?

 

No, it’s been crap the last 6 years I agree, but I’m going to start comparing Alexander and Doherty otherwise we’ll be here all night.

 

Dochert's football was awful, as were the majority of the players he brought in, and vertually all of them that came from Millwall, except Philll Babb.
Torpey, Treacey, Reid Morgan, Dowson where there any more ?
Tracey and Reid were trouble , Tracey soon back to London after smashing several shop windows on a piss up in Bradford.
So no , you can not compare the Doc with GA

Over 270 league appearance , with 54 goals , 1 goal every 5 games.
Very poor for a big lad .

 

Well in 2016 and 2017 we were absolutely pushing for promotion to the championship as we finished in the playoffs 2 seasons in a row.
What’s the most we spent? £200k on Charlie Wyke.
So reversing your Bank of England inflation rate, what would that £200k be worth in 1991? Peanuts

 

Good info. So the fee we paid for McCarthy was a significant investment at that time and is very unlikely to be repeated today even if we were in the league above.

 

But where did the money come from back then?
Average crowds of 5000 at £10 per game.
Dave Simpson didn’t have a pot to piss in.
Could it have been because we didn’t have to find £500k in annual rent?
Also, you’re right that players are different. Very very rarely did they cry off injured for 2 seasons. They played every game and clubs got their moneys worth.
Could you imagine signing a player for £500k and ending up with a Walker, Patisson that play 50% of games if we are lucky.

 

I remember we signed Jon Ford (from Swansea maybe?) for big money in the mid 90s. No idea where the money came from but these signings did happen.
