Knocked around York on Satday & had lunch at Le Cochon Aveugle, or 'The Blind Swine'. Top notch. A meeting in the middle of classic & modern.

One of the dishes was rare beef with 'Yorkshire salad' - the salad being summat the chef's parents serve with sunday dinner. I remember something similar from childhood: cucumber & vinegar being the main ingredients. Anyone else used to have this?

Just seen this. Shame it’s not viable to keep both premises open.

It is. They're going to need to do it well to compete at the bottom of town, too.

Must have had financial help (which I am ok with) and can only hope it gets the trade they are looking for.

I can remember a sandwich shop opening in the Oastler (down from the fishmongers) about 4/5 years ago, it had really nice stuff, the sort of stuff you'd see in Leeds. Me & my lad used to get food there on the way to City and I used to wonder how long it'd last. 6 months I think, wrong place, wrong town.

I see EGN's new spot Canto took a bit of a hammering from Jay Rayner today.

Finally got around to trying the new Syrian "Road Stop" takeaway on Manningham Lane after the match yesterday and it was chuffing great. I had something called Tauk which was a lightly spiced chicken kebab which came with a decent portion of well cooked wild rice, a herb salad, a sort of feta mousse and some great pickles. Not a great deal of choice on offer for veggies but the chickpea thing that my sister went for was very tasty and the fiery spicy potato starter is well worth a try. The guy that served us was very friendly and talked us through the menu which did initially look a bit daunting (to someone completely oblivious to Syrian cuisine) and we even got some free samples of the desserts to try whilst we waited for our meals to be cooked.

Hmmm, yes it has. Nevermind, I'm highly unlikely to go for a meal out in Manchester anytime soon.

New restaurant opened in the Piece Hall. I was expecting a half-arsed 'brasserie' job but the evening menu looks like the real deal.

    Grouse, Turbot...

Help needed Ladies and Gents. Going out with a Lady tonight but been out of the game for a while so not been eating anywhere of any note recently. Wanting to know decent restaurants (old or new) anywhere between Apperley Bridge and Skipton really which is worth going to. (preferably serve decent beer as well) I know it's a bit brief but suggestions welcome.

Tempest Arms other side of Skipton. Pretty decent actually. Used to live over that way so been a while since I've been. Great beers alongside the food.

I would have suggested Tempest Arms or the Bull just back towards Skipton.

what after shave do you use? You take a lady out for a meal and she drives while you sample the ales. I'm green with envy.
