    I saw that appointment which certainly surprised me. It turns out Canvey Island is where he started his footballing career as a youth player.

    There's a vague memory of that somewhere in the grey matter.

    I tend to associate Canvey Island with Dr Feelgood and Wilko Johnson!

    Just up the road from where I grew up (Thurrock). We used to go to the beach there when I was a kid and actually had a week’s holiday there once, in the early 60s. Seems bizarre now.
    Edit. I use the word ‘beach’ advisedly. It’s all shale.

    I never went there. I wasn’t much of a clubber in my teens tbh. Occasionally went to Raquel’s in Basildon or TOTS in Sarfend.

    I know the area well. I lived in Chelmsford from the age of 12 until I left for Uni. One of my brothers lives in Benfleet and the other in Westcliff.
