I only went a few times. I had moved to Manchester by then so it was just the occasional visit for gigs when I was home.

I do remember going to Maestro's to see Adrian Smith play just after he left Iron Maiden in 1990 I would guess.

I liked it because the staff were all students who didn't worry about seeing ID. Nice to have a hassle free bottle of Holsten pils age 16.

It closed in 1963. My information was that it was replaced by the Alliance but in that picture it looks like the A of the Alliance which suggests it was already there next door. I found your White Lion on an OS map from the 1890s, though it was only shown as a public house, directly opposite the top of James Street next to a small road leading to an enclosed court. There's a Lost Pubs of Bradford site that lists all the pubs in Bradford and when they closed but only includes the one in Kirkgate. Thanks for your information which adds to my knowledge of bygone Bradford.

I saw that in Waterstones the other week (if indeed it's the same book) but it was bloody expensive.

Yes, I've got a copy of that, it's a great read. I've also got another slim book by him called Inns and Pubs of Old Bradford. It's available from Bradford libraries along with two more by Paul, The Local, a history of the English pub, and The Public House in Bradford, 1770-1970. The latter is interesting but heavy going in places, based on his university PHd thesis.

I know we have strayed a long way. But if you want a book about beer and pubs, then this is an excellent read. You can pick up a decent second hand copy on book resellers or e-bay for under £4 or new for under £8. Pete Brown is an authoritative author with a very engaging style. I have read several of his books, well worth getting hold of. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pete_Brown_(writer)

Pete Brown is the new beer reviewer for the Sunday Times. I reckon he's got the second best job in the world. He's only second to the bloke who writes about wine and that's because he gets to travel to South Africa, Australia etc.!
