Just looking over the last few.....

Last season, Orient won 6 of their last 6, Reading only managed 2 wins in their last 5, Orient won on the final day to take them to 78 points, Reading lost on the final day to end of 75 points.

In 23/24, Oxford won on the final day and had 4 wins in their final 6 to jump from 7th to 5th on the final day. Barnsley held on by the skin of their teeth going winless in their final 6, just pipping out Lincoln who lost on the final day to slide to 7th.

In 22/23, Peterborough won on the final day and had the best form between them, Derby and Portsmouth from their final 6 games. Posh final day win and Derbys final day loss put Posh into 6th place.

In 21/22, Wycombe won their final 6, actually went unbeaten in 12 with 8 wins, to claim 6th place on the final day over Plymouth who took just 3 points from their final 5 games, with Wycombe sealing the 6th spot with a last day victory.

In 3 of the last 4 seasons, the form team climbing into the play offs last minute whether that's 5th or 6th, have gone onto Wembley. It would be 4 out of 4 if Sheff Weds didn't mount the greatest play off comeback of all time. There is some science into wanting to avoid the late surging team.

I hope your wrong Gaz, at the moment Reading are a far bigger threat than Huddersfield, if Town dont win a draw would be better than a Reading win imo.

Sorry but you must have been asleep the last few months or you are in denial. Im pretty much sure the vast majority on here will agree weve been shite in recent months.

Poor on the eye, scraping wins, horrific on the road. Tell me im wrong. We go into the play offs performing like we have been we dont last long.

And we've never been out of the top 7 FACT chill out, most would have been delighted to finish in a play off position if offered it at the start of a new season, of course as most City fans I want us to get promoted through the play offs I'm far from writting my team off, we get beat we get beat, its one hell of an achievement to have got where we have.

Even if we do get there not in the greatest form its still a 3 game series where we know anything can happen ...........out of the 4 that should get there which i think will be us,Plymouth ,Stockport and Bolton the other 3 will have huge pressure on them we have a free hit at it ............... lets just roll with it

Yes, I know you personally haven't always said it. It's more of an observation that it's a theory thrown about a lot. I don't know why the 6th placed team would necessarily be the 'form side'. There's every chance on this occasion we could have a patchy run of form and finish 6th.

That's interesting but I'm not sure it's a very large sample. I get the logic that a late surge can see a team sneak in, but mathematically there is no reason why a side on form would finish in any particular position within the play offs.

Not for me. We were strong against Donny, Peterborough, Vale and Stockport. We've been inconsistent but sh*te is a bit of a stretch. It's a tight league and every team bar Cardiff and Lincoln have had at least a dozen 'bad days at the office'.

I'm more than happy to be where we are, and as you suggest roll with it, I'll be delighted if we turn Northampton over 4 - 0 but first job is to get a win and 3 points then no one is making ground on us, as you say once we get a play off place its who turns up on the day, we know how poor we can be but we also know on our day were a very hard team to beat.

As do I, once we make the play offs past form goes out of the window its all down to the team that turn up on the day, we've seen it so many times with our club.

If we get to the play-offs and if we fail to win in the play-offs there will be something to blame. Tactics, someone playing poorly, contentious decision, poor referee or in the case of the last time we got there a substitution. I guarantee no-one will cite poor form going into the play-offs as a factor. It just gets bandied about at this stage of the season and is pretty irrelevant.

Crikey, is it the end of the world?

We have an amazing situation to firstly get to the play offs and then maybe promotion.

Peterborough we were fantastic, Doncaster and Stockport we scraped through with 1-0 wins, but solid enough. As for Port Vale, only beat what is in front of you but they are the worst team in the league. You have only named 4 games from the 17 we have played since Mansfield battered us on new years day.

I'm happy with 4th, its been a great season but our form is inconsistent and we need to improve on the way we play. We don't like going behind, we are far too predictable and we don't have a plan B. Tyriek Wright has been a bit of a hero in all honesty because without his moments of magic we wouldn't even be in the play offs right now. Add to that our appalling away form that is 9 losses in 11.

I think things need to improve in time for the play offs. We need better performances to stand a chance...Metcalfe has gone off the boil, Neufville looks disinterested, Power is not having the same impact on games and we look clueless at CF.

This is the main thing i thing needs to drastically change and solving the forwards form might help other things will fall into place, but the striker play has been abysmal for months. Just once in the last 15 league games has the starting striker scored a goal, which was Jackson against Peterborough. And in that spell, a striker has come off the bench to score just once too, which was Humphrys away at Wimbledon when we were already 3-0 down. Strikers just aren't making an impact from the start or changing the game once they come on either.

They are all averaging a good shots per min ratio too since 2026 began, they've just all gone completely off the boil at the same time. Need to find something from the pool of forwards in the next few games and there's probably not a better side in the league to start against at the minute either in Northampton who look to be doomed on recent form.

Not many in the stands at Wigan tonight, thought it was Huddersfield at first glance

Big day today with everyone around us playing each other apart from Stevenage.

Hard to decide what is a perfect set of results in as there are benefits from all of the possible outcomes.
    • Huddersfield v Reading - I would probably prefer a Huddersfield win and take the chances it's not a season turning moment for them
    • Plymouth v Bolton - A Plymouth win or draw gives us the chance to overtake Bolton and put another team between us and 7th, a win for Plymouth keeps then within touching distance with 6 games left. A win for Bolton along with a win for us puts a 9 point gap between us which should be too big
    • Stockport v Wycombe - similar to the game above, a draw or win for Wycombe gives us the chance to open a gap to Stockport but a Stockport win gives the chance to open a 9 point gap to Wycombe ahead of Monday and Wycombe only have 5 games left
