Definitely needs closing for 15/20 mins after the game.

Road closures near and around Football Grounds is common!

The failure to do so around VP is an abdication of responsibility and a potential significant Health and Safety Breach.

This is a link to the road closures around White Hart Lane. https://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/the-stadium/attending-matches/getting-here/road-closures/

There are extensive restrictions for several hours, including major roads.

The area between Manningham Lane down towards the railway including the Midland Road, Thorncliffe Road, and Cornwall Road could be a no traffic pedestrianised area between 10 minutes before and 20 minutes after a match.

If they can do it around other stadiums, there is no reason why they couldn’t do something in line with the above. No ‘A’ Main Roads would be closed, they are all ‘unclassified’.

And, as I've mentioned previously, when we've played there, Sheffield United seem to have no problem closing the A621 (Bramall Lane) after the match, so closing a minor road like Midland Road shouldn't be an issue.

The car just missed me on Saturday. Luckily I didn’t have my granddaughter with me. He almost went head on into an oncoming car and fortunately skidded to a halt beforehand. I hope he’s having to visit the panel beaters this morning. Close Midland Road and the road leading down to it behind the kop until 13.45, 17.30 or 22.00 on match days depending on kick off times.

Off hand from memory the old White Hart Lane had roads closed, as did Highbury. At our old place Green Street from the Barking road to the station was closed until 30 mins or so after. At the new place the only traffic you'll see will be the 8 seater golf cart things "Bubble Buses" that take old codgers like me from Stratford station and drop you at your block.

Have the club ever requested that the road be closed or have they always refused to do so due to any associated costs?

Many years ago (at least 10 and probably closer to 15) when David Dowse was still at the club and crowds were much smaller, the club investigated closing part of Midland Road on match days. I don't recall all of the details but at the time, the road closure had to be applied for for for each game as they happened. The Council wouldn't support a more general closure. The cost of each closure had to be covered by the club and was something of the order of £4k-5k for each closure which mounts up over a season. The club's decision not unsurprisingly was to not go ahead.

As you say those rather surprising figures are now 10/15 years out of date. The political climate will have changed a little. I am sure that neither the council or club, would want a serious incident.

This is what came up on Google AI

Key Costs Associated with Road Closures (2025/2026 Season):
    • Administration Fees (Councils):
      • Large Commercial Events (One Day): In areas like Manchester, a single day of road closures for a large commercial event can cost around £3,261.
      • Standard Temporary Closure: Fees often range from approximately £800 to over £2,000 for processing the necessary legal orders.
      • Smaller Events/Subsequent Days: Smaller, local, or repeated closures can be cheaper, ranging from £167 to £643 per additional closure.
I don’t walk on the Midland Road, it is in the opposite direction to my route home.

However if anyone has evidence and are seriously concerned then raise the issue!

At Derby last year in the paint pot cup they closed the main roundabout by the ground after the game until the crowd had dispersed. I bet there was only 3/4000 there too.

At Birmingham last season they closed pretty much every road around the ground including all exits from nearby car parks for around 45 minutes after the game. That was extreme in my opinion but it shows it can be done and is commonplace elsewhere.

I'm puzzled by this picture. It looks like was on MR heading towards Queens Rd. When I saw the nutcase driving like a maniac through the crowds, he was on MR heading in the opposite direction towards VP pursued by a few guys on foot. He then turned right up Thorncliffe Rd to face even more crowds where he was halted again continuing to drive like a maniac to get through.

Had he already turned around in MR itself amongst all of the traffic and the crowds?

I hope that somebody has been able to pass his details onto the club and the police.

When he passed me he was weaving at speed down the wrong side of Midland road towards Queens Road. Then he reversed back up Midland Road, again at speed with some fans in pursuit. A wing mirror flow off as well, although I don't know it it was his or he hit a parked car

That guy on Saturday was driving like an absolute maniac. I am just so relieved no one was hurt as he could have done a lot of damage. I came out of the game feeling a pretty angry about how the game had gone and then just witnessing such a near miss felt pretty zen like thinking well, there are definitely worse things which can happen than seeing your team lose a match.

I hope the police caught up with the lunatic. It made me think about the Liverpool victory parade incident, there seemed real intent to do some damage, or reckless at best.

I decided to do something about. A simple straightforward e.mail to the seven links above (slightly different to the three news agencies).

    Hello
Perhaps time for the club, police and council to consider the safety of around 20,000 spectators outside the ground? Please read the thread. In particular many other clubs have arrangements where roads are closed to safeguard supporters. Surely Bradford MBC and Bradford City value the 20,000 or so?

    Regards

I suggest others on here, who are concerned about their own and other supporters safety, do something similar.

Personally I think the road closure is really only required after the game when everyone leaves at once. There never seems to be a problem before the match when everyone arrives at different times and sticks to the pavements. The issue is always afterwards.

Not sure with the safety of the Bradford public in mind why the club need to pay for the road closing, surely the Council are responcable for health and safety with regards fans exiting Valley Parade especially when they are aware of the likes of Saturdays incident which is not an isolated incident. Midland Road is closed off at the back of the Midland Road Stand, does the club have to pay for that or do the police demand opposition coaches need to be in one place so they can get away fans out of the City quickly.
Maybe if they expended the area blocked off to Thorncliffe Road that would stop that situation ie cars couldnt come down or go up Thorncliffe Road ?
