Feels like a very decent signing to me. Fact is we need quality and plenty of it in the CM area - injuries and suspensions this season taught us that we need good options there.

Mutual agreement , probably on a decent wage too. He’s been sub 14 times this season from best I can see and no starts.

Nice to be back at the level where we sign players I've actually heard of.

Sure he was a sub for everything but 3 cup matches but a sub they used in most matches. And it's not like they are saving a massive amount for a single month, especially as even with a mutual termination he will have received part of his owed wages. If it had been midway through the season and they were looking to create room for a signing then you could understand it but the timing is odd. The only reason he might have needed released was if he was signing for an MLS or South American team not to go looking for an English club.

With the serious injury he got in Saudi, only being a sub in Denmark and then being released at a strange time it would make me worried about his fitness

Yet he must have had a thorough medical to get two years . Maybe it’s that in game rotation we commented on for perhaps Sarcevic or Patto swapping with him?

Conflicted with this one. On paper he’s a proven winner at this level, has a decent amount of Championship experience and is well thought of at his previous clubs, but I’m struggling to look past his previous 2 seasons. He’s coming back from a couple of serious injuries ( groin surgery and hernia repair) and has played the equivalent of about 16 full games in 2 years. I’m leaning towards it being a decent signing but to use an old cliche, “he needs a good pre-season”.

My Sunderland pal reckons he was finished at League 1 level 3 years ago but I did point out he did over 40 games in the Championship with Wigan after leaving them.
His experience will be needed when the squad will need rotation so for me it’s a steady signing.
The one thing the squad desperately needs is pace and I do worry our midfield is looking abit leggy. A full window summer of transfers to go though and Power is a pleasantly surprising start.

As some seem to have already said, not many appearances.

A massive red flag that Callum Johnson has played more football games than him in the last 2 years….

Played 47, 53 and 54 times in the 3 seasons before the injury in Saudi though.

It's just a case of whether he's recovered and learnt to manage his body or not.

Well its probably a reason he is here - for 1st team football. We have Smallwood and Pattison, and im certain we bring in another CM too.

I get what you are saying re pace , but our player of the season isn’t exactly blessed with it ?
I wonder if my assumption that he been brought in to run from deep midfield and cover Patto, etc is wrong and he’s been brought in for his technical ability and passing to sit alongside / cover or just in front of Smallwood as somone suggested earlier?,

That other has to be younger with legs to get about the pitch and press the opposition, if that's the way GA will continue to play.

Good pedigree with experience, think this rules out Khela coming back from Birmingham for a further loan period.

Does it thoughif we want good cover that won’t cost an arm and a leg in as many positions as we deem fit?

Midfield is always going to have the added pressure of injuries and bookings/ sendings off as we nearly saw to our cost?

I’d say we need 7 decent midfield players minimum.

I’m not counting Odour/ Bobby in the mix either.

Metcalf of Chesterfield last night looked decent if small and lightweight ( on loan from Everton) .

    Smallwood if he re-signs
    Patto
    Sarcevic
    Power

So we need more strength in depth for those 4

Agreed. As we know, at least 2 of the 4 are injury prone.
