    I have a choice between the tail end of a bottle of Morgon (Chatelain), or the better part of a bottle of NZ sauvignon blanc (Oyster Bay). Maybe a glass of each...

    Very impressive selection, the Oyster Bay Pinot Gris is a nice drop, called into Hawkes Bay vineyard on holidays whilst living in N.Z previously.

    When I got home I had a couple of glasses of a nice Lebanese wine. Chateau Oumsiyat Mijana. Very good.

    Agree about the Pinot Gris. A lot of good NZ and Oz wine, and much of it does make its way over here. It's the rare occasion when I don't have a few bottles from each country in the cellar.

    The RCB measuring system: tail end is more than the dregs but less than a half, whereas the better part is more than a half but less than full! :):)

    I'm reminded of the system Hugh Johnson once proposed, with tongue somewhat in cheek, for rating wine: the lowest possible score was one sniff, the highest possible was the purchase of the whole vineyard.

    Yes, despite and throughout all the troubles there they do produce some very nice wine. Ch. Ksara appeared over here a year or two ago; it was well worth drinking.

    First pint of the year. Did dry January, then last week I was on a wine buyers trip in Northern Italy (lake Garda) tasting 132 wines in two days. Back in my bar in Tallinn now, and a pint never tasted so good. Thornbridge Market Porter on cask. The advantage of our early kick offs, is that I’ve got the bar to myself until opening just after the game has finished. IMG_1821.jpeg

    @River_City_Bantam@River_City_Bantam for some strange reason a couple days ago I bought a couple of bottles of Costco’s own label wine. A kirkwood Bordeaux and a NZ Sauvignon Blanc. IMO the Sauvignon Blanc was so much more rewarding than the Oyster Bay (which I really like) and around half the price. The Bordeaux is waiting but given a) the relative shortage of French wines here in Tn, and b) the ridiculous prices, I tend to stick to the new world stuff (avoiding US wines like the plague). Just wondering how your experience of the Costco wines is?

    I find them delightfully vibrant and flirtatious, with earthy undertones that suggest closer acquaintance will lead to very satisfying experiences...

    (As one writer on wine once said, wine writing, like love-making, should be approached from a position several degrees over the top.)

    Actually, I'm not a Costco member, so I really cannot say anything about their wines.

    But I did have an NZ Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc today -- Rose Family Estate's Riverlore. Not aggressively herby like some NZ examples, but very nice in and with the bourride.

    Yes, a lot of good New World wine -- and given where I live, a goodly amount of it is very local indeed. Argentina and Chile are staples, lately some stuff from Mexico and Uruguay has been coming in as well, and of course Oz and NZ are always in the cellar.

    My experience of buying wine in the USA, is obviously limited. I remember years ago we went to a Liqor Store in Boston. A large range of wine. I asked for advice as to which USA wine to buy, and was told stick to European, US wine was reportedly full of sulphites!

    Since my daughter and husband moved to California, I have visited and bought wine there. I would say it is a little more expensive than the UK, perhaps 5-10%, with a decent range on offer. Their local is this vintner https://plumpjackwines.com/collections/around-the-world They compare reasonably favourably to Majestic in the UK.

    Enjoyed some Tameran Malvasía Volcánica last night.
