EFL League One Play-Off Semi Final Second Leg
    Thursday 14th May 2026 20:00
Bradford City (4th) vs Bolton Wanderers (5th)
University of Bradford Stadium (AKA Valley Parade)

    Record:
    Games Won: 15
    Games Drawn: 20
    Games Lost: 20

    Last 5:
    06 Mar 2021: Bradford City 1 – 1 Bolton Wanderers
    22 Nov 2025: Bolton Wanderers 0 – 0 Bradford City
    02 Dec 2025: Bolton Wanderers 3 – 0 Bradford City [EFL Trophy]
    25 Apr 2026: Bradford city 1 – 1 Bolton Wanderers
09 May 2026: Bolton Wanderers 1 – 0 Bradford City [EFL League One Playoffs]

    Bolton Wanderers:
Bolton Wanderers came away from their playoff semi final first leg encounter at the Toughsheet Stadium with a slender 1-0 advantage. Amario Cozier-Duberry scored the only goal of the game with a fine curled finish, the 20 year old Brighton loanee notching his 10th goal of the season across all competitions. In truth, Bolton Wanderers probably deserved their victory on the night, but few among former City midfielder Steven Schumacher’s ranks will feel like the job is done yet.

Bolton, who won just 6 away games over the course of the 25/26 league season, must now travel to Valley Parade and face off against the team with the 3rd best home record in the division, a record bettered only by the 2 automatically promoted clubs in Lincoln City and Cardiff City. No easy task, naturally, but Schumacher and his players will draw confidence from their recent 1-1 stalemate at the University of Bradford Stadium, a repeat of which would send the Trotters to Wembley to face off against the winners of the Stockport County-Stevenage tie. Stockport go into the second leg on Wednesday night holding a similarly slender 1-0 advantage – but they will also enjoy home field advantage in their attempt to defend that lead, a luxury not afforded to Bolton Wanderers.

Some Bolton fans may feel they could have used a second goal, something they came close to grabbing after an uncharacteristic howler from Curtis Tilt on Saturday night, but this time Cozier-Duberry could only find the inside of the post – giving the Bantams a reprieve on the occasion, with the bouncing out before curling away for a goal kick. Minimal breathing space, then, for Bolton Wanderers as they face up to a daunting trip, but it remains very much advantage: Trotters.

For their part, Bradford City now must try and achieve something they haven’t managed across 4 straight games against Bolton Wanderers this season – they have to actually beat them, not just match them. After failing to register a single shot on target at the Toughsheet, Bradford City will know Bolton’s tails will be up, but approaching this tie doesn’t get any easier from a tactical standpoint. Yes, the lead will be most welcome for Wanderers, but getting the balance right between aggression and timidity will be a fine balancing act. Possession for possession’s sake is never an ideal solution when defending the narrowest of leads, so Bolton will need to continue to play at their expansive best, using their exceptional wingers to create havoc in the City backline once again.

Bolton will know Bradford City will intend to get at them from the off on Thursday evening, and while they will be confident they can continue to dominate the ball against City – something they have comfortably managed on all 4 occasions this season – you can bet City will be primed and ready to try to make the most of their opportunities this time around. In truth, Bradford City did have opportunities but failed to make use of any of them on what was something of an off-day going forward. While never the division’s most prolific side, Bradford City have been reasonably efficient in front of goal this campaign and will hope that when things do fall at their feet this time around, those chances aren’t similarly spurned.

Bolton will know an early goal will settle any nerves both on and off the pitch, with their opponent’s unlikely not exactly renowned for their free-scoring exploits. When it comes to sheer firepower and making up sizeable deficits, Graham Alexander’s Bradford City simply don’t have the track record for it.

    Bolton Wanderers 1 – 0 Bradford City

    Bolton Wanderers 2 – 3 Luton Town

    Bradford City:
Antoni Sarcevic, for once guilty of spurning City’s best chances and failing to exert much influence over the away leg, will be desperate to make up for it at Valley Parade this Thursday evening against one of his former sides. Now the club’s talismanic attacking force in the wake of Andy Cook’s January departure, Sarcevic would love to get one over on Bolton, and build upon last year’s much-celebrated 90+6’ minute winner that sent Bradford City to League One once again.

If anyone can do it, Sarcevic looks the most likely, especially considering he might wind up facing another ex-employer at Wembley Stadium if both Bradford City and Stockport County make it that far. In terms of the latter, we will know whether the Hatters have made it or been derailed by Stevenage come Wednesday night, with Thursday evening playing host to City’s task of overturning Bolton’s 1-0 advantage at what should be a bouncing Valley Parade.

While hardly infallible, one of Sarcevic’s finest qualities is undoubtedly his ability to pop at just the right moment. Perhaps the stage at the Toughsheet wasn’t quite big enough for the wily veteran, who is not only renowned for his ability to conjure up a bit of magic at the most opportune time, but is also comfortable bundling the ball home if that’s what it takes to create a ‘moment’. Bottom line: if anyone is going to be there, Sarcevic is as likely as any.

His performance will need to improve, however, after an indifferent showing in the first leg. Other players that could step up are City’s top assister Josh Neufville (7 assists), and the returning Tyreik Wright. While the unfortunate George Lapslie is likely the man to make way should Alexander decide to field Wright either from the start or as an early substitute, Tyreik has been a player that shown the ability to conjure moments of real skill and strike from long range when needed. A key player, Wright could potentially be fielded at left wing back as an alternative, a tactical selection that might see Ibou Touray drop to centre back and City go more attacking from the off.

The name ‘Bobby Pointon’, too, hasn’t been far from the lips of most City fans, the home-grown talent having been unfortunate to suffer an injury at such a crucial stage of the season. Graham Alexander has openly toyed with the idea of fielding Pointon in the final games of the season, and this one might be the very last – but it now seems unlikely that Bobby will feature. Graham praised Pointon for admitting he hasn’t quite felt fully fit, and for not wanting to let his teammates down with a below-par performance. Still, there may be some hope in the minds of City fans that it’s something of a ruse, or that Bobby feels fit enough to make a cameo. For now, we’ll rule him out.

All the talk of attacking players who could create won’t be complete without mentioning Kayden Jackson, City’s current first choice number 9, or indeed Stephen Humphrys, who has been in-and-out of the first team lately thanks to some inconsistent form. Both capable of making something happen, both Jackson and Humphrys have been on the scoresheet in relatively recent games, and could still have a major impact.

The defence, along with captain Max Power, will also have to be ‘on it’ on Thursday night, as City can scarcely afford a single slip up. If Bolton double their lead, City’s chances of making it to Wembley will instantly plummet, with the club having not registered more than 2 goals since way back in October (EFL Trophy) and September (league action). While hopes of a glut of goals coinciding with the biggest game of the season will never be far from fans’ minds, realistically it’s not likely to happen against a side as well-drilled and with such obvious quality as Bolton.

    Bolton Wanderers 1 – 0 Bradford City

    Exeter City 1 – 2 Bradford City

    Prediction:
Having failed to beat Bolton Wanderers 4 times this season, it’s hard not to succumb to some level of pessimism. That said, Bolton themselves will feel the second leg is evenly poised, and with their mediocre away record, might think their most likely ‘best’ outcome is a draw. That would, naturally, send Bolton Wanderers to Wembley, but playing for a draw hardly seems like a sensible option. The Trotters will surely go out to win, but there’s something psychologically discomforting about having something to lose in this situation – when playing another team with everything to gain.

If this fixture plays out anything like the league fixture on April 25th, Bolton will deserve to go through. Bradford City just haven’t been able to find a way to make Bolton uncomfortable enough to wilt, and a lack of firepower is the obvious reason for that. Still, a 1-0 win for Bradford City hardly seems impossible, and would set up an especially nervy period of Extra Time and – potentially – penalties.

That’s what, to me, seems the most likely here. Yes, both sides would no doubt like this one wrapped up at the final whistle, but I can’t see it from a Bradford City standpoint. Bolton Wanderers, of course, are the more likely aggregate winners over 90 minutes considering they only have to match City and going a goal up on Thursday night would probably give City too much of a mountain to climb. They could get back into the game, sure, but expecting them to score multiple goals against a side they have netted against just once in 4 outings seems unrealistic.

Bradford City, simply put, must keep a clean sheet. At the other end, they must pose more of a threat and must show far more composure than they were able to on Thursday night. I think they can do both – it just means there’s absolutely no room for error!

Expect a nervy night, a fraught night, but a night where City rise to the occasion and at least force Extra Time. From there, who knows… but perhaps City might just make it to Wembley…

No matter what, though, this has been a fine season and a remarkable achievement in their first season back in the third tier.

    WELL DONE CITY.

    Final Score:
    Bradford City 1 – 0 Bolton Wanderers
[Bradford City to win on penalties]

Bold. Literally the dream! Wembley would be amazing. I want it so badly but I think we'll fall short.

    The first goal is important
We get it and they could start to crack, they score and i feel we are done for, cant see us getting 3
I think we might draw 1-1 like the league game
    Hope i am wrong
Whatever, the lads have done us proud again this season.

    Can't wait.

That roar before the kick-off is going to be immense. Everything that we wanted after the recent spell in L2.

We don't need 3 Andy, 2 would be enough in that scenario and we'll take our chances on penalties.

Two days to go, it seems so long since Saturday but let’s hope the games worth the wait? Despite being a goal ahead there’s no way that Wanderers will sit back, we just don’t have the players to do that so it will be another attacking line up from Schuey, probably the same as Saturday. It will be interesting to see what Alexander does because you’re the ones who need a goal so I’d expect a pretty attacking line up from you guys as well but you’d have to be mindful that if you commit too many men forward you won’t be able to double up on ACD and Cissoko as you did last weekend. It’s going to be a nervy night for both but if you get an early goal you could well go on to win. I certainly don’t want it to go to penalties because you’d definitely come out on top of that. We’ll be wanting to win it in normal time so I can see it being a pretty much end to end contest between to very evenly matched sides.

Yes. Ive seen a lot of comments saying that if they score 1st its all over which I dont go along with. Obviously the first goal is crucial and we'd have a mini mountain to climb if they got it. That said, I think we are going to have to score at least 2 regardless, as I dont see us keeping a clean sheet. 2-1 as you say, gets us to extra time from which point it's anyone's game

My heart says we go all out from the off and blow them away like we did to teams at the start of the season....

My head tells me we haven’t attacked at that level in probably 6 months or maybe longer, and us getting 2 or 3 against a really well organised side protecting a lead is going to be too tall an order. I think Bolton attack early, try kill the crowd and go 1-0 up in the first 15. We'll probably get one back at the start of the second half but ultimately fall short or scoring that second goal.

This will be our 4th semi final in 3 years with Wembley the prize. Carlisle defeat-That substitution- . Then Wycombe in EFL trophy where we missed enough chances to win 3 games, then Birmingham in the EFL against their expensive squad where we ran them close. Can we do it this time? I think Thursday could be one of our great nights at Valley Parade.

I'd not put two and two together with those.

We've become the nearly men. That Wycombe game still rankles. We absolutely dominated that game. Travesty we lost it.

I think patience is needed obviously with pressure when we can. But an early goal from Bolton would probably end our chances

I don't think Bolton will expect us to come out all guns blazing and think thats exactly what we should do. Rattle them from that first whistle and take the game to them. Play our best game. Go and win. Come on city
