You don't get a personal choice, they are either locked in a standing or seated position depending on the decision of the club, or the rules of the competition you are playing in eg the Champions League may say All seater stadium so they would be locked in the seated position. The safe bit is that you all have a dedicated space per person with a rail in front and behind so no pushing and shoving or over crowding.

I think from the discussion previous, and I would have to go back and check, the flooring would need to be re concreted with new steps to give the gap between the rows big enough, so you would loose a row of seats for every two rows of safe standing, plus a few seats per row due to width of seats. so from a section with 3 rows of 24 seats you may replace it with 2 rows of 20 seats. So not only is there the extra cost of the installation but a reduction in capacity. Please note, figures are from memory from a few years ago when it was discussed so may be out

They weren't locked at Derby Storck. Most people used them to sit down at half time but obviously, during the game then it's a standing area so nobody will be asking you to sit down.

So it's safer to stand up in a lower tier than it is in an upper one? :joy:

They aren't locked in this country as it isn't allowed, seats have got to be available for you to sit down or stand up so they are basically like normal seats but with a barrier behind them.

Why is it safe to stand before the game starts, at half time and again after the final whistle but not when the game is on?

I have no doubt that if they got the go ahead at VP, the club would expect them to be crowd funded and installed at the front of the Kop!

The issues with standing in the upper tier with the current all seater set up is that it is steeper than the lower tier to higher chance of someone falling and causing injuries to people in front of them and if someone falls near the front there is a risk they could fall into someone in front of them and knock them over the edge.

In an ideal world of course and obviously funding is the issue but it would be great in 20 years time to have safe standing areas in grounds over the UK.

So everyone in the upper tiers (including me) shouldn't stand up at all in case we fall over.

How many people have actually done this since the ground was redeveloped. I would hazard a guess at zero.

Good point, but don’t leave out goal celebrations and when everyone stands for a corner etc. let’s all just crawl to our seats to be safe.

I recall an away game at Newcastle some time ago. As you know the away end is high up in a steep stand. It was half time and I was walking back up to my seat when one of our supporters walking down the other way tripped. Amazingly I managed to brace myself and stopped his fall, despite him being a great deal bigger. If I had not been for me he would have ended up in a heap with an injury or two

The safe standing areas can not block the view of anyone behind or at the side of the areas, which is why they were probably looking at NWC.

I'm just saying what the ground safety authority say. Last season though a Leeds fan fell from the top tier at Stamford Bridge and a Maidstone fan fell from the top tier at their match against Ipswich. People don't normally stand up near the front of the top tier so of course the risk of it happening if minimal. Just because something hasn't happened before it doesn't mean it's not a risk and should be ignored.
Ultimately the club have got to do what the ground safety authority say or they risk parts of the ground being closed

I have only been once, it is exceptionally steep in my view, and the players are a mere spec’s on the grass.

My guess would be purely based on cost. Getting something new/refurbished means investment, which our owner has proved time & again he is incapable of doing. And before the usual suspects mention the pitch, this was non-negotiable as it HAD to be done in order for the team to be able to play on it this season

I've got the answer, but it costs. Convert the NWC to safe standing and move them back there (next season now)
