Jenson Metcalfe Signs on 3 Year Contract

Happy with this. Comes with good reviews and pedigree and a good age to develop as an asset.

Still another midfielder needed for me.

 

I think we need both too. I appreciate we need to balance the books by offloading Smith/Wilson, yet if we do, fill those spots and I think we're looking pretty good going into the season

 

Yes I think we’ll get another midfielder on loan now. I would’ve been happy with this lad on loan but permanent is great, we might finally have some serious saleable assets in our team in the next year or two.
I’m not as convinced as a few others that we’re actually looking for a “Smallwood replacement”, I think that DM position the way Smallwood plays it is being phased out of the game and midfielders are expected to cover both roles, more box to box engine type midfielders contributing in attacks and defence rather than sitting in front of the defence.

Sounds very positive from reading up on him. Long contract too, a potential asset is always nice. Everton posters seem happy he's going to have a chance elsewhere, looks like he was captain for most age group sides in his time.

One thing that crops up was his injury in early 2022. Sounded like he was showing real promise at 17 in the U21s but he then did his ACL. Long time out for recovery, but came back to be U21 POTY for 23/24. If he didn't have the long injury and instead its another year of development under his belt, maybe this is just a loan or he's looking higher? Hopefully the lad continues to kick on at City!

 

Was surprised to read this as a permanent, but well chuffed it is. My only knowledge of him came in the Chesterfield game last season and thought he was really decent that day. Excited about the prospect of what he brings.

That's my only knowledge of him too and whilst I'm pleased with the signing, I'm not getting carried away based on seeing him play well against us in one game. Made that mistake before with Odusina and I'm not making it again.

 

Reading the Chesterfield forum he was out injured for them for a number of weeks in late 24 and after his return he developed at a rapid rate of knots. Not a bad word to say against him.

 

I don't mind you making decisions on "one game against us".

I just don't want our management doing the same thing.

Our opinions as supporters don't impact on our team.

Don't know much about this guy, but Metcalfe (20), Pointon (21) and Kavanagh (21) all buzzing around the first team (legitimately) is good news.

If any of the 3 has a quality season, their value could increase exponentially.

 

We all have opinions, some may also have the skillset to to make those opinions accurate.

A lot of us, and I include myself, don't have enough football knowledge to correctly forecast if they fit into our team.

That's why we have professional management to undertake that task.

Power is just that. He hasnt really been a box to box for about the last 4/5 years. End of his Wigan days he sat for the last 2 years. At 32 with 3 L1 titles, you dont get much more experienced than that! He may well partner Metcalfe in the middle but im not convinced.

Smallwood was never a holding midfielder until his Hull tenure, only when father time started to catch up with him. Blackburn and Rotherham spells he was up and down the pitch.

Metcalfe, Power, Pattison, Leigh.....Sarcevic who has plenty of experience at CM. Thats 5 CMs right there. Only 2 shirts available. We may well bring in another body but im not sure it will be a specialist DM! Thats a bloated squad.

When Power signed, Smallwood got released. GA has said once or twice we have Power when talking about the gap in the middle. Metcalfe looks more like Khelas replacement.

 

Of course we all have opinions, that's what a forum is for. I just think you're reading things into my post that simply aren't there. I'll say it again, I'm pleased with the signing. Nowhere have I said or alluded anything to suggest I don't think he'll fit into our team. My comment from a purely personal point of view is that based on my very limited knowledge of him, I'm not going to get carried away and say things about him that I don't really know because I made that mistake with Odusina and we all know how that turned out.

 

And captain at every age group for them which says something about his character.

 

The sort of young forward thinking signing we haven’t made for years. Hopefully the lad stays injury free and develops into a championship player at city.
