I get all this but where’s the evidence any of this happening in terms of scouting. Nothing in this window has any resale value we’ve got Metcalfe maybe Bobby who are possible assets. The club don’t invest in this type of infrastructure. The punching above our weight can along last for so long. There is no strategy beyond luck, and it’s alarming.

 

You don't need a window to pick up prospects like Metcalfe.

I find the description of 5 loan players and one on a short contract until the end of the season as 'investments' a bit odd.

 

Yep, even more so considering the short contract signing was only because we were at the maximum limit for loanees in the match day squad otherwise he'd be a loan aswell

 

Well if their combined salary is more than the players that have left , then it is investment financially
Only Jackson is long term , but if the other players do well and gain contracts beyond this season , then I would think they are all earning more than most they have replaced
If they don’t perform, we move on and don’t have players surplus to requirements on long contracts

He may think it as in we've "invested" more money in the wage bill by paying more/a greater proportion of wages on Ashby etc than loans usually would but an investment to me is more like the Mercalfe deal.

It may just be his lazy use of language, I hope so anyway!

 

The “investment” is in much higher wages . Certainly for the Newcastle lads/ Mullin.?

 

Yep, he's basically saying it's costing us more to have these 7 players here than it was to have the players they've replaced. That's not investment, it's just spending more money!

Young lads with potential and possible future value
Would you then class them as investment
The club are in a difficult position financially

Bit of a stretch.... there's some distance between operating at a slight loss, which most EFL clubs do these days, to facing administration.

I know some of our fan base are tetchy over running at a loss given the last 20/25 years, but writing off money or facing seasons at a loss, it's probably a reality of life now in English football if you want to be a CH or top end L1 club consistently.
