Agree, I think there is a bit more going on behind the scenes than meets the eye. At the last time of checking SR was worth approx 100m which probably doesn't guarantee you Championship survival, why would he spoonk all of his fortune ? I know nothing but suspect something is cooking...

And both probably on salaries that we have not got a hope in hell of matching currently
    Kenny as well
I think I read they have a purchase option on Cissko of £1.2 million, which only
    Happens if they go up
One eighth of our budget this season

It is indeed a pill he will have to swallow if we are promoted. And a very bitter and expensive one! Rupp is no fool and I give him credit for what he has done recently. I would expect him to fully understand the financial realities of life in the Championship but the consequences for him personally are a major step-up from whst he's done so far.

I've seen or read different sources quoting quite a range of different average or typical wages in the Championship. Some average out all staff at the club which includes a huge number of non playing ataff including stewards and turnstile staff, academy players etc which tends to reduce averages. Some exclude overheads such as NI and pensions etc which are all part of the cost of employing players at the club. Deloittes for example recognise this when quoting averages and try to exclude non-playing staff but it's far from perfect. In fairness, I've little knowledge of particular wages numbers but if anything averages costs of first teamers excluding all of the other groups of employees are a little higher if anything. Annual wages budgets for even lower end Championship clubs are in the high teens of millions and it will need a major change in our player philosophy and financial standing if we wish to become established there.

But before we can start dreaming and speculating, there's the minor problem of Exeter and then (hopefully!) the lottery of the play-offs!

either way its likely to be an expensive summer.

How many players do we have under contract and how many need replacing or upgrading?

before you even start on the full time squad, the 5 loanees will be gone so someone is going to have to cover those losses and toss in Evans who we wont see beyond summer.

regardless of where we finish, over half the first 11 seem to divide opinion between who is good enough and who isnt.

Powell, Evans, Mullin, Wheatley, Sibley, White, Kelly, Byrne, Odour, Leigh, Cook all go i would think Ashby might be worth another look. Baldwin , Tyriek, Hilton and Sarce out of contract
16 players to sort one way or another, unless i have missed someone

I was just laughing to myself at player values on transfer market Sibley £1.5 mill, Ashby £1.4, Neufville, Mullin and Humps all valued at £500k our cheapest player value Tilt at £50k
They even have Evans, Swan and Joee Wright in the £300k bracket.
    Who writes this stuff

To be fair, i dont really think the cheap summer exists in L1 these days, certainly not in the Champ. I think i saw that there were 20 or 21 clubs in L1 this season that had spent £200k or more on at least one transfer fee, some clubs with multiple big fees.

Whichever division we are in, you'd think there's a minimum of 10 new faces coming through the door. I do think we need to improve on our loan signings to be honest. It's kinda obvious we use loanees as squad fillers, but they dont even accomplish that lately, they cant even make the bench! Cant really say any of the 6 we've had this season have been a success as none have claimed a spot. Last year we had 8 loanees, Shepherd the best of the bunch, Tayo probably in the win pile too but the rest either rarely played or were pretty naff when they did. Banks and Tyrieks first loans in summer 2022 were the last time some loanees came in and stamped a claim in the side.

Its an odd one with the loans, non really made much of an impression this season
Do you go down the Bolton route ,lots of good quality loans, who ultimately might achieve nothing and all be gone come June having cost a pretty penny
Wherever we end up, probably a sizeable re build in the summer and hopefully we look more attractive to players and have the money to do it.

I think we need to change approach with them and try go for at least a few first team loanees. Unless we have incredible loan deals and we are paying peanuts, there's probably a lot of money in Mullin, White, Sibley not making the team and Ashby & Wheatley at best being bench warmers.

You look at Bolton, if the young kids get them up, their parent clubs might just roll the dice again. Cozier Duberry has had a great season in L1, he wont get a game at Brighton yet but they'll want him in the Champ next year on loan..... what better place to send him that a squad, club, manager he knows and know his game? Or, you try add in deals like they have with Cissoko where they have an optional £1.2m fee for him at the end of his loan, in L1 thats pricey and you probably look again but in the Champ thats much more do-able and you have a player who knows your system in and out.

I fear with us if we went up, we'd have guys like Humps, Tilt, Power etc who are probably not Champ level players, but are under contract and getting at least a 25% bump if we go up. So suddenly we have a lot of guys who cant make the level but would probably be on the higher end of L1 salaries and we might struggle to A) get them off the books and B) free up that budge to try get some CH quality. Dont have that worry with loanees i suppose.

Not so sure about Nick Powell going. For much of his career he’s been a 1 in 3.5 goalscorer at Championship level. He’s clearly a class act whose injuries have severely limited his career. Since coming back from his last injury setback he’s been a valuable option from the bench whose class and experience has been obvious. I could see him getting another short term, performance related deal whether we’re in L1 or the Championship.

GA saying he did not expect him to return at all this season
Undoubtedly a very good player, but can we risk the possibility he picks up another long term injury and eats away at our limited playing budget

Well, everything is risk/reward. I’m sure they can conjure up a deal that is heavily weighted towards payment for appearances.

Only way to go for a player like that, you just cant trust his body unfortunately. Didn't we offer Andrew Davies a similar sort of deal? Another very very good but injury prone player, fairly certain we offered him a wage cut or something but a heavily appearance boosted deal if he was fit to play but Ross County offered him a better deal and he was off.

I think he retires in the summer and focuses on being a LinkedIn guru. He is already posting cringeworthy stuff on there

Sheffield Wednesday will start next season on 0 rather than -15 after the EFL have decided to waive the points deduction for next season. They will be under budget restrictions but it's not been announced what the restrictions are.

Was talking to my sheff weds mate at our work do the other day, he said the fan base believe they are going to have a cap of £7k per week to spend on player wages, which is still more than enough for L1.

Doesn't really feel like a wage cap at all that. Unless it's overall rather than per player
