I think it would be interesting to have a poll of how many people would be prepared to pay more for a more safe and secure environment. I think it would be higher than you are suggesting.

I would happily pay 1 or 2p more in tax if it guaranteed more police on the streets. Would you?

Yes, I would pay more. But in reality, people are always persuaded by the wafting smell of a cut in taxes.

Those who can afford it should pay more of a share too, a lot more.

My apologies if i didn't get the reference m8, i agree with you. This 'Bobby on the beat' is a lovely wonderful notion that leaves you all warm inside when the truth is its actually pointless. You could double this countries number of police and it wouldn't make a difference. It would to the police in being able to do their job more efficiently but what exactly is that job these days? Spending millions chasing unlicensed drivers with helicopters and x5s, catching them then watching them get a suspended sentence and a fine they have no intention of paying.

I'm not sure it's as simple as that but it would be helpful if there was a fairer way to apportion tax.

We could start by identifying those who shelter their wealth in the UK's tax havens beyond the view of HMRC. There's a few billions to start with.

When the Lib Dems were in coalition with the Tories didn't they threaten to tackle tax evasion? Unfortunately it never happened.

More police is one part. Police being allowed to police is an even bigger part for me.

Yes, the coalition did initially tighten up on tax evasion and closed some tax avoidance loopholes including a couple of high profile cases. But later the Govt reduced the resources in HMRC on tax evasion and stopped short of some of the big tax avoidance issues involving our own tax havens. The big opportunity would have been having to comply with the Anti Tax Avoidance Directive but of course having now left the EU, that is unlikely to happen. Those who have structured their businesses such as a certain major pub chain or a couple of retail empires to deliberately avoid tax or have left the UK to live in tax havens as the owner of a major airline has done will continue to avoid contributing fully to the exchequer.

'He was described as a "quiet and polite and decent guy" by asylum seekers who were also residing at the city centre hotel.'

    Aye. A real charmer.

I'm sure I've heard that comment elsewhere........ah now I remember it was in the opening scene of Scarface at the immigration centre for the dead legs that were claiming asylum from Cuba.

With potential dozens more coming back if Shamima Begum is allowed back.
