Last season we didn't have a quilty bench to call upon and when we made substitutions it made us weaker. Now we have midfielders who know they will have to be on their game or their out of the first 11 and its great competition amongst them where as last season Smallwood and Gilly didn't have that. Next season we could start with Mcdonald and Walker and after 60 minutes we could take them off and bring on Smallwood and Pattison which wouldn't weaken the team at all , and most clubs will have 2 good midfielders but when subbed the team is weaker like us last season.

Well there are alot saying we require widemen but I see wing backs or a diamond personally. And any case - we have Chapman, Odour, Walker, Young, Osadebe - even Gilliead and Pointon if we need some width desperately. Thats alot ot carry on the wage bill for a formation we are unlikely to play week in week out.

If 1 or 2 of them leave (Young, Osadebe) then I can see an argument but not at the moment.

Smallwood is club captain. I really don't see him playing 30 minute cameos. He is a starter.

It was just an example of the point I was trying to get over and not suggesting Smallwood wouldn't be starting.

Remember the old days….we used to frequently have a club captain and a separate team playing captain?

The club captain was the “club face” for publicity, looking after new players and being the father figure and spokes person for the younger players and apprentices . The playing captain is self explanatory.

Going off at a tangent did anyone of my vintage (71) notice that the formation we grew up with in the 50s and 60s returned in the Champions League final. When I was young we had two fullbacks and, ideally, a tall centre half, a right half and left half in front of them whose job was to mark the opposing inside forwards in defence and to support their own in attack. Then two inside forwards, right and left, in front of them to create the attacking play and finally two wingers and a centre forward. That was precisely the system used by Man City in Istanbul. 3223.

It was similar, but a slightly different applied 352 . The three up top only became a “three” rarely.

Not many teams could do it because they don’t have …Jon Stones interchanging with colleagues all over the field. It was a strange final and formation. I did think they were nowhere near as effective as in the semis. Obviously it worked because the result proved it.

This is what I think the formations will look like. its really glaring that we are missing an out and out right winger. and with Bradford ends hints of a familiar face returning - and someone "that can only be annouced in a few weeks" its Scott Banks that is coming back on loan.

also apologies for misspelling ridehalgh's name on the first one.

Also its perfectly reasonable for Oyegoke to replace haliday in a back 4, just depends how good he is.

so just to be clear here we have,

4-4-2 D (even though the lack of wingers makes me think its actually a 4-3-1-2)

    3-5-2

The middle 352 is identical to the one I named ( subject to incomings) last week I believe. The one at the bottom with Ridehalgh and Holiday looks too ponderous?

yeah like I say on the post if Oyegoke is good he could replace Haliday - if we are looking to replace Ridehalgh we would need an LB as Oduor is more forward, but could slot in if required.

Id say certainly Ist half. Second 451, but I couldn’t figure Hallidays role.

Much preferred the Ist half set up. But the real problem is where does Walker play? He’s too good to leave out on that showing?

Looks like we have plenty of options, Kev!

Only caught ten mins today, around the Walker mazy run, in the second half, but it’s gonna be interesting to see more in the other friendlies. Had forgotten about Ash Taylor and McDonald!

2nd half was still 352. Back 3 of Odusina, Stubbs and Oyegoke with Oduor and Halliday as wing backs

Was disappointing to see Odour played at WB when he’s openly said that he’s more of a winger and other clubs fans have said that he struggles at WB.
He didn’t look comfortable there at all to me. I’d like another LB / LWB to be brought in so that he can be used further forward.

Ok yes I see. Halliday didn’t work neither did Oduor.

Let's trust Hughes opinion over fans of other clubs, very few who have managed at professional level eh.
